Today marks the public launch of By the City, For the City, a new ideas competition that will provide the foundation for September’s Urban Design Week festival in New York City. From April 11-30, we’re inviting everyone to share their ideas for how to improve the city’s urban fabric. Then, in May, we’ll launch an international design competition, enlisting top architects, planners, and urbanists from around the world to create proposals that address the issues that the public is most interested in. To share your idea, visit the BtCFtC website. We can’t wait to hear what you have to say!

Institute fellow Rosemary Wakeman (center, in black) discusses the need to re-define public space in the context of Urban Design Week.
Fellows met at the Center for Architecture for a special discussion on Urban Design Week, for which the Institute received part of the 2009 Cultural Innovation Fund from the Rockefeller Foundation.
Urban Design Week is a week-long festival, scheduled for May 2011 in New York City, designed to engage citizens in the complex processes behind the making of a city, and to harness New York’s cultural vitality and celebrate its exceptional urbanity. With programs that include public performances, film screenings, presentations of projects, public debates, and installations, UDW seeks to celebrate the fact that cities are made by collective effort and that each participant can be an important part of that endeavor. We’re developing partnerships in the coming months, so please get in touch if you’re interested in getting involved.
