The Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at St. Louis’ Washington University announced its spring lecture series, with Craig Dykers set to speak tonight (2/1), and visits from Gregg Pasquarelli and Richard Sennett scheduled for later this semester; Rob Rogers will speak about Rogers Marvel’s recent work (including President’s Park South, pictured at left) at the National Building Museum in Washington on 2/2; Denise Hoffman Brandt and Board Member Toni Griffin have organized a panel, Defining Cultural Landscapes, at CCNY on 2/3 (with opening remarks by Olympia Kazi); the Center for Architecture will host the panel Freedom of Assembly: Public Space Today Redux on 2/4, with Thomas Balsley, Rick Bell, Lance Jay Brown, and Susan Chin all participating (Brown will be back at the Center, with David Dixon, for a discussion about Climate Change on 2/17); Bruce Fowle will speak at the Center’s Active Design 201 on 2/7; Board Member Claire Weisz will speak in New York, also on 2/7, at the Studio-X panel Trash Tubes of the Future; Board Member Enrique Norten will give a talk at the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach on 2/9; that same day, in New York, Ernie Hutton will moderate a discussion on the Miami21 zoning initiative; and a new exhibit at the National Academy, featuring work by Robert A.M. Stern, has just opened and will remain on view in New York through 4/29.

Deborah Gans‘ new rose window for the Museum at Eldridge Street, designed in collaboration with artist Kiki Smith (and pictured at left), received a 2011 Faith & Form award from the IFRAA Awards Program for Religious Art & Architecture; the Land Art Generator Initiative design competition announced its kickoff, with Executive Director Anne Guiney on the jury (deadline: 7/1/12); recipients of the 2012 AIA Honor Awards were announced–among the winners are Rob Rogers and Board Members Toni Griffin, Thom Mayne, and Enrique Norten; Rosemary Wakeman was awarded a EURIAS Senior Fellowship, and will spend the next academic year at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies completing her book on the New Town Movement; Womens’ E-News will honor Beverly Willis as one of their 21 Leaders for the 21st Century at a gala reception this May.

Lance Jay Brown will serve as a juror for the AIANY State 2012 Honors Awards, to be presented this coming April; the teams proceeding to the third and final round of the National Mall Design Competition, managed by Donald Stastny, were announced, with Craig Dykers, Michael Manfredi, Rob Rogers, and Peter Walker all still in the mix; Dykers was also just announced as the chair of the jury for the 2012 Steedman Fellowship in Architecture International Design Competition; Ron Harwick’s Columbia Parc neighborhood in New Orleans (pictured at left) had a banner year, taking home multiple honors–click here to download a full list of awards and more information on the project; Patron Steven Holl’s Cité de l’Océan et du Surf in Biarritz, France, won the sole award in the Play category in Architect magazine’s 2011 Annual Design Review; critic Lee Bey cited the opening of Helmut Jahn’s Mansueto Library on his list of the best Chicago architecture of the past year (echoing Blair Kamin’s list from earlier in the month); the Parks for the People competition, organized by Olympia Kazi’s Van Alen Institute and with Steven Handel sitting on the jury, just announced the selection of nine teams to move on to the second round–one of which is led by CCNY’s Denise Hoffman Brandt and Board Member Toni Griffin; Daniel Libeskind’s Crystals at CityCenter project in Las Vegas won Gold and Sustainable Design Awards in the ICSC’s annual US Design & Development Awards; Urban Omnibus announced an essay competition to complement the Architectural League’s exhibit The Unfinished Grid, with our own Board President Michael Sorkin on the jury (deadline: 2/1/12); and Rosemary Wakeman has received a EURIAS Senior Fellowship to spend the next year at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies completing her book on the New Town Movement.

Next Breakfast Club: January 25th

The first Breakfast Club of the new year will take place on January 25th at Buro Happold’s offices at 100 Broadway from 8:30-10:00 AM. Board Member Toni Griffin will be presenting her research on shrinking cities, and we’re very much looking forward to a productive and thought-provoking discussion. You’ll need to be registered in order to get into the building, so please make sure to RSVP if you know that you’re planning to attend.

Curbed included Board Member Winka Dubbeldam’s 597 Greenwich Street on their list of Innovative Residences You Need to Know Right Now; Mayor Dave Bing announced the re-launch of the Detroit Works program, with Board Member Toni Griffin heading up the development of a long-range development plan for the troubled Rust Belt city; Mary Margaret Jones (whose Olympic Park in London, pictured at left, was just completed) has been selected to design a new public entertainment waterfront attraction in Corpus Christi, Texas; Bill Kelley is leading the charge to add more sidewalk cafe space to Greenwich Village’s West 8th Street; good news came for two skyscrapers designed by Daniel Libeskind: the developers of his Zlota 44 building in Warsaw secured financing to complete construction, while his Eden Center in Jerusalem received official approval to move forward; Anne Locke spoke to WestfairOnline about the recent boom in medical facilities construction; “The Mobius,” Michael Manfredi’s entry to the Portal to the Point ideas competition in Pittsburgh, was featured on ArchDaily; Moshe Safdie released renderings for a massive $3.1 billion, six-tower, 10 million-square-foot mixed-use complex planned for Chongqing, China; a course designed by NJIT’s Darius Sollohub in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity was featured in a round-up of innovative and unconventional college courses around New Jersey; and Robert A.M. Stern was interviewed about his skyscraping One Horizon Center project in Gurgaon, India.

In his latest Gotham Gazette column, Tom Angotti looks into NYC’s plans for its new bikeshare program; Matt Berman and his partner Andrew Kotchen launched SpruceBox, a new web platform to help homeowners visualize renovation projects; Phil Enquist won two competitions to develop master plans for a 2-kilometer stretch of the Yangtze Riverfront in downtown Nanjing and a new urban center at Duqm City in Oman; William Fain’s firm recently completed master plans for the Chinese cities of Chengdu and XiCheng; Anthony Flint argued for concentrating early development of a high-speed rail system in the US in megaregions like the Northeast Corridor; Board Member Toni Griffin joined in on the New York Times‘ most recent Room For Debate feature on the demolition of foreclosed housing; construction work has begun on Patron Steven Holl’s athletic complex for Columbia at the northern tip of Manhattan (pictured at left); Madison’s Chazen Museum of Art, designed by Rodolfo Machado’s firm, has just opened; the National Mall Design Competition, led by Don Stastny, announced its jury, which will include Board Member Thom Mayne; Linda Pollak will serve as the Lead Juror for AIA Pittsburgh’s Design Pittsburgh awards; and Rosemary Wakeman spoke to the Baltimore Sun about gentrification in that city’s Union Square neighborhood.

The World Architecture Festival, for which Board President Michael Sorkin chaired the Grand Jury, kicks off tomorrow (11/2) in Barcelona; Steven Handel will deliver the Benjamin C. Howland Jr. Memorial Lecture at the University of Virginia School of Architecture on 11/4; that same day, Board Member Thom Mayne will speak at Architectural Record’s 2011 Innovation Conference; also on 11/4, Board Member Enrique Norten will speak at Yale’s Catastrophe and Consequence symposium; on 11/5, Colin Cathcart will participate in the Center for Architecture symposium Buildings = Energy; on 11/7, Deborah Gans, Matt Blesso, Mark Ginsberg, and Mark Strauss will all participate in the Architectural League’s Making Room symposium; Craig Dykers will speak at La Ciudad de las Ideas in Puebla, Mexico, on 11/11; Board Member Saskia Sassen is co-chair of the Committee on Global Thought’s Ecogram IV: China event on 11/11; Stuart Pertz will join a discussion on Planning the Future of Coney Island’s Amusement District, also on 11/11; the Reconsidering Postmodernism conference, to be held in New York from 11/11-12, will feature Robert A.M. The firm of Thomas Balsley was named as one of six finalists in a competition to re-design the waterfront of Corpus Christi, Texas; David Cooper was interviewed about the importance of maintenance at LEED-certified buildings; TASHAN, a new restaurant designed by Board Member Winka Dubbeldam, has just opened in Philadelphia (pictured at left); Philip Enquist participated in Milwaukee’s fifth annual Water Summit; Board Member Toni Griffin has been named as the first Director of the new J. Max Bond Center at the Spitzer School of Architecture of the City College of New York; John Hartmann’s +Farm project made its first appearance in Perrysburg, New York; Mary Margaret Jones is working on the re-design of Richmond’s James Riverfront; North Jersey’s The Record calls the hiring of John Palmieri to helm the state’s Casino Reinvestment Development Authority “a smart bet”; and Larry Wayne Richards served on the jury for Twenty + Change 03, the exhibit of which opens in Toronto today.

Mayne & Griffin Speak at MICD’s 25th Anniversary Conference

Board Member Thom Mayne (pictured at left) was invited to give the opening keynote at the 25th Anniversary meeting of the Mayors Institute on City Design in Chicago on April 27th. Another member of our Board of Directors, Toni Griffin, also addressed this prestigious gathering of mayors from across the United States.
