Next Monday, Gretchen Bank and Board Member Tami Hausman will advise about marketing, communications, and business development at the Center for Architecture; on both 7/23 and 7/27, Ernest Hutton talks “Active Design 101: An Introduction to NYC’s Active Design Guidelines,” also at the Center for Architecture; Rick Bell will moderate “Hyper-Public: Olympic City – Present Past Future” on 7/27; an exhibit about Buckminster Fuller and the Bay Area at SFMOMA, featuring work by Board Member Thom Mayne, closes on 7/29; the Goethe Institut in Washington, DC is currently showing “Daniel Libeskind: Architecture for the Angel of History” (Libeskind’s Jewish Museum pictured above) through the end of August.

Matt Blesso’s Blesso Properties is breaking ground on the Pavilion nightclub on Fire Island after it was destroyed in a November 2011 fire; only his second project in the UK, Patron Steven Holl will design a hospital for Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre; David Manfredi unveiled plans to redesign the Suffolk Downs racetrack in East Boston, adding a casino and resort; former New York Knick Clyde Frazier opened a restaurant in West Midtown designed by Board Member Thom Mayne’s Morphosis Architects (pictured at left); the nonprofit arm of John Palmieri’s Casino Reinvestment Development Authority will put on a video and light show to attract visitors to Atlantic City; Robert A.M. Stern will design the American Revolution Center in Philadelphia; Donna Walcavage served as the landscape architect for the newly open Polo Grounds Community Center in West Harlem.

Last Friday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Achva Stein gave a tour of the new Moroccan Court, followed by cocktails on the roof; also on 6/15, Rick Bell’s Center for Architecture hosted the AIA New York Chapter’s 145th Annual Meeting, where Lance Jay Brown is the 2013 First Vice President/2014 President-Elect; last Saturday in Shanghai, Board Member Thom Mayne spoke at the XXL Supertall Buildings conference co-hosted by Tonji University and USC; while 6/16 in the South Bronx, Kaja Kuhl hosted a workshop about her phytoremediation project; Laurie Kerr was at the Center for Architecture on 6/18 for a talk about “NYC’s Net Zero School”; Architecture for Humanity is having an online auction, running from 6/19 through 6/29, featuring work by Patron Steven Holl, Daniel Libeskind, and Moshe Safdie; Jack Nyman’s Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute is hosting the day-long Advanced Energy Performance: Real Estate’s New Energy Asset Management Paradigm conference (pictured above) on 6/21, where both he and Laurie Kerr will speak.

At the AIA National Convention, Susan Chin was elected to the national AIA Vice Presidency, Patron Steven Holl won the AIA Gold Medal, and the firms of Board Member Thom Mayne and Robert Rogers won Honor Awards; the New York chapter of ASLA announced their Design Awards, with Thomas Balsley’s firm taking home four awards, and the firms of Michael Manfredi, Barbara Wilks, and Henry White each receiving one; the Graham Foundation announced their 2012 Grants to Individuals, with Nina Rappaport and June Williamson both receiving awards to support their respective publications about photographer Ezra Stoller and designing suburban futures; Phil Enquist will be honored with Openlands’ 2012 Conservation Leadership Award at a luncheon in October; Matthew Berman’s workshop/apd won a Building Brooklyn award for their BLDG 92 at the Navy Yard (pictured at left); the Society for Marketing Professional Services awarded Board Member Claire Weisz’s studio with an Industry Award for their Battery SeaGlass Carousel.

James Crispino’s firm, Francis Cauffman, has completed extensive renovations on the new Wilmington offices of Delaware law firm Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor; David Manfredi’s firm, Elkus Manfredi, will design The Galleria at Sowwah Square, a new luxury retail destination in Abu Dhabi; Michael Manfredi’s new Visitor Center opens this week at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (pictured above); along with Robert Rogers and Peter Walker, Weiss/Manfredi was also selected to redesign sites along the National Mall in Washington, DC (in a competition overseen by Don Stastny); Board Member Thom Mayne will design the first academic building for Cornell’s engineering campus on Roosevelt Island, as covered in the New York Times and New York; the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation named Barbara Wilks to draw up redevelopment plans for an island on the Bow River.

During the month of April, Larry Wayne Richards was a Visiting Professor at the National Cheng Kung University Department of Architecture in Tainan (Taiwan), where he also presented a lecture, “Is Everything the Same Now?”; Patron Denise Scott Brown will be at the Center for Architecture on Friday (5/4) for a conversation about the National Mosque of Baghdad competition; the final tours of David van der Leer’s stillspotting nyc exhibit will take place on 5/5 and 5/6 in Jackson Heights, Queens; Board Member Saskia Sassen will be at the Frieze Art Fair on 5/6 for a panel about land occupation; on 5/8, Rick Bell will introduce a moderated discussion about “Practice in the Middle East” at his Center for Architecture; the next day in D.C., Lance Jay Brown will be at the National Building Museum to present on public space in the nation’s capital; Sassen will also be at the Megaprojects symposium hosted by Columbia’s GSAPP and CURE on 5/11, and will then participate in the New Cities Summit in Paris (5/14-16), along with Daniel Libeskind; an exhibit of Patron Steven Holl’s work is now on view at the Meulensteen Gallery through 6/2; also on now through 7/29 is an exhibit about Buckminster Fuller at SFMoMA (image from exhibit pictured at right) that includes work by Board Member Thom Mayne.

In Sandy Springs, GA, David Dixon’s firm, Goody Clancy, will develop a downtown master plan focused on improving commuting conditions; last week, a team from SOM lead by Phil Enquist presented new details about their Lakeside development project of a former US Steel plant on the South Side of Chicago; Eric Galipo was on the team from H3 whose campus master plan was recently approved by the Board of Trustees at Adelphi University; John Palmieri’s Casino Reinvestment Development Authority has released a new master plan for Atlantic City designed by Jon Jerde’s Jerde Partnership; Mary Margaret Jones and her firm, Hargreaves Associates, presented their design concepts for Destination Bayfront to a 250-person audience in Corpus Christi, TX; Emerson College broke ground on their new L.A. campus building designed by Board Member Thom Mayne; last Thursday, Gregg Pasquarelli presented SHoP’s vision for Pier 17 in Lower Manhattan’s South Street Seaport to Community Board 1 (pictured at left).
