The AIANY chapter selected the winners of its 2012 Institute Honor Awards, with Susan Chin taking home a Matthew W. Del Gaudio Service Award, and Rob Rogers‘ firm Rogers Marvel (which recently unveiled plans for Brooklyn’s new Columbia Street Waterfront Park) being named Firm of the Year; the Architect’s Newspaper’s annual Inner Circle round-up of the ‘best of the East Coast’ includes David Cooper’s WSP Flack + Kurtz as one of the best MEP firms; REBNY announced Douglas Durst as the recipient of this year’s Bernard H. Mendik Lifetime Leadership in Real Estate award; and Patron Steven Holl is on the jury for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art’s design competition for a temporary pavilion on the grounds near Holl’s Bloch Building addition (pictured at left)

The Wall Street Journal spoke to Tom Angotti about the Bloomberg-era evolution of zoning in New York City, and published a wonderful profile of Michael Arad; Architect talked to Board Member Tami Hausman about how architecture firms can (and should) use social media strategically; Luca Farinelli’s “53 Questions, 265 Answers” in Log 23 features interviews with Patron Steven Holl and Board Member Thom Mayne; the WSJ features Stephan Jaklitsch and Mark Gardner’s renovation of Marc Jacobs’ private Soho showroom; Patricia Lancaster expressed surprise at Related’s decision to hire a California contractor for the massive Hudson Yards project in Manhattan; Gregg Pasquarelli’s Pier 15 opened along Manhattan’s East River Waterfront Esplanade; Linda Pollak’s new Elmhurst Branch of the Queens Library, which is wrapping up construction, was featured on NY1; and Rosemary Wakeman was quoted in a Corpus Christi Caller-Times article about the relationship between streetscapes and civic pride.

On 1/17, the Storefront for Art and Architecture will host an opening reception for artist Allard van Hoorn’s 007 Urban Songline, which will transform the iconic facade designed by Patron Steven Holl and Vito Acconci (pictured at left) into a musical instrument; also on 1/17, Rick Bell’s Center for Architecture will hold a “Breakthrough” party to mark the connection of the existing and new gallery spaces; Ken Greenberg will open a conference on the future of Montreal’s Griffintown neighborhood on 1/20; Rosemary Wakeman’s Urban Studies Program at Forham will host the panel Urban Dialogues II: Making Cities Work on 1/23; and that same day, Gregg Pasquarelli and Board Member Thom Mayne will participate in the Columbia GSAPP’s symposium Where is More Manhattan?

Lance Jay Brown will serve as a juror for the AIANY State 2012 Honors Awards, to be presented this coming April; the teams proceeding to the third and final round of the National Mall Design Competition, managed by Donald Stastny, were announced, with Craig Dykers, Michael Manfredi, Rob Rogers, and Peter Walker all still in the mix; Dykers was also just announced as the chair of the jury for the 2012 Steedman Fellowship in Architecture International Design Competition; Ron Harwick’s Columbia Parc neighborhood in New Orleans (pictured at left) had a banner year, taking home multiple honors–click here to download a full list of awards and more information on the project; Patron Steven Holl’s Cité de l’Océan et du Surf in Biarritz, France, won the sole award in the Play category in Architect magazine’s 2011 Annual Design Review; critic Lee Bey cited the opening of Helmut Jahn’s Mansueto Library on his list of the best Chicago architecture of the past year (echoing Blair Kamin’s list from earlier in the month); the Parks for the People competition, organized by Olympia Kazi’s Van Alen Institute and with Steven Handel sitting on the jury, just announced the selection of nine teams to move on to the second round–one of which is led by CCNY’s Denise Hoffman Brandt and Board Member Toni Griffin; Daniel Libeskind’s Crystals at CityCenter project in Las Vegas won Gold and Sustainable Design Awards in the ICSC’s annual US Design & Development Awards; Urban Omnibus announced an essay competition to complement the Architectural League’s exhibit The Unfinished Grid, with our own Board President Michael Sorkin on the jury (deadline: 2/1/12); and Rosemary Wakeman has received a EURIAS Senior Fellowship to spend the next year at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies completing her book on the New Town Movement.

The AIA’s New York chapter, led by Rick Bell, has just put out the call for entries for the 2012 AIANY Design Awards (deadline: 2/3/12); Francis Cauffman, led by James Crispino, has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing A/E/C industry firms on ZweigWhite’s annual Hot Firms List; Patron Steven Holl was named as the winner of the prestigious 2012 AIA Gold Medal; SOM’s Chicago Office, where Philip Enquist is the Partner in Charge of Urban Design and Planning, received AIA Chicago’s Firm of the Year award; Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin included the opening of Helmut Jahn’s Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago (pictured at left) in his round-up of the best architecture of 2011; Board Member Enrique Norten will serve as a juror for this year’s Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award, which will focus on Cape Town, South Africa (deadline: 2/24/12); AmericasMart founder John Portman will receive a special honor, the “Legend for Life” award, in recognition of his five decades of entrepreneurship and service to the home decor industry; Board Member Saskia Sassen made Foreign Policy magazine’s list of the Top 100 Global Thinkers for her “passionate advocacy of an urban-based society”; and the undergraduate program at the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture, led by Frederick Steiner, was ranked second in the nation by DesignIntelligence.

If you’re looking for some ideas for what to give to design-minded friends, family, or colleagues, we’d recommend browsing through the list of our Fellows’ publications over the past year: Tom Angotti’s New York For Sale came out in paperback; Andy Bernheimer and Board Member Claire Weisz both had projects included in Michael Crosbie’s New York Dozen; Jim Dart and Deborah Gans‘ work in New Orleans was featured in Beyond Shelter: Architecture and Human Dignity; Founder Ann Ferebee released a new edition of A History of Design from the Victorian Era to the Present, updated to include recent years; critic Justin Davidson included Alexander Gorlin’s Tomorrow’s Houses on his round-up of the most Notable Design Books of 2011; Ken Greenberg’s Walking Home was published to great acclaim; Jamie Hand, Olympia Kazi, and Kate Orff co-edited Gateway: Visions for an Urban National Park, which features work by Barbara Wilks; Horizontal Skyscraper, Patron Steven Holl’s latest publication, is just hitting bookstore shelves now; Board Member Thom Mayne rolled out a new manifesto called Combinatory Urbanism: The Complex Behavior of Collective Form; Board President Michael Sorkin’s most recent collection of essays, All Over the Map, has been building buzz; and Frederick Steiner released Design for a Vulnerable Planet this past spring.

Stern and Patrons Steven Holl and Denise Scott Brown is on view at the Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture through 2/18/12.

In his latest Gotham Gazette column, Tom Angotti looks into NYC’s plans for its new bikeshare program; Matt Berman and his partner Andrew Kotchen launched SpruceBox, a new web platform to help homeowners visualize renovation projects; Phil Enquist won two competitions to develop master plans for a 2-kilometer stretch of the Yangtze Riverfront in downtown Nanjing and a new urban center at Duqm City in Oman; William Fain’s firm recently completed master plans for the Chinese cities of Chengdu and XiCheng; Anthony Flint argued for concentrating early development of a high-speed rail system in the US in megaregions like the Northeast Corridor; Board Member Toni Griffin joined in on the New York Times‘ most recent Room For Debate feature on the demolition of foreclosed housing; construction work has begun on Patron Steven Holl’s athletic complex for Columbia at the northern tip of Manhattan (pictured at left); Madison’s Chazen Museum of Art, designed by Rodolfo Machado’s firm, has just opened; the National Mall Design Competition, led by Don Stastny, announced its jury, which will include Board Member Thom Mayne; Linda Pollak will serve as the Lead Juror for AIA Pittsburgh’s Design Pittsburgh awards; and Rosemary Wakeman spoke to the Baltimore Sun about gentrification in that city’s Union Square neighborhood.

Architecture for Humanity named Andy Bernheimer as a finalist in their competition to design a skate park under the Manhattan Bridge; Solar One was announced as the recipient of a $1.25MM city grant to build NYC’s first energy-positive building, designed by Colin Cathcart’s firm Kiss + Cathcart; John di Domenico’s Atlantic Terminal Pavilion was profiled in the Spring 2011 edition of Metals in Construction magazine; Craig Dykers’ Snøhetta was named as a finalist in a competition to re-design Aberdeen’s Union Terrace Gardens; Patron Steven Holl spoke with Carla Leitao about his Cite de l’Ocean et du Surf in France, and was profiled in the latest issue of ICON; Mary Margaret Jones served on the jury for the 2011 SOM Prize; a team of Langan International engineers led by George Leventis is working on the design for the recently-proposed Kingdom Tower in Jeddah (pictured at left), which will be the world’s tallest building when completed; David Manfredi’s firm will serve as the architect for the expansion of the Green Bay Packers’ storied home at Lambeau Field; Michael Manfredi’s and Kate Orff’s respective firms have been selected to participate in an ideas generation project to re-think Pittsburgh’s Portal Bridge; ArtDaily reports that no fewer than four major buildings by Moshe Safdie will open this fall; and Kris Scheerlinck has written an essay on Barcelona’s Plaza de las Glories Catalanes in the latest issue of Quaderns.
