The annual Open House New York will take place this weekend (10/15-16), with a kick-off party tonight in Midtown. Buildings by many Fellows (Sara Caples, Linda Pollak, Claire Weisz, et al) will be open to visitors. Meanwhile, the Chicago Architecture Foundation will launch its own annual Open House series this weekend as well, featuring tours of buildings by Phil Enquist, Helmut Jahn, and many others.

The AIA Council of Architectural Component Executives named Rick Bell, director of the AIANY chapter and the Center for Architecture, as its Executive of the Year; Sara Caples’ Queens Theater-in-the-Park received two recent awards: one for Best Restoration from the Municipal Art Society’s MASterworks (for which Deborah Berke served on the jury), and another for Best Use of Color from Architectural Lighting magazine; the New York Observer included Ken Fisher (pictured at left) on their list of the Top Lawyers in NYC Commercial Real Estate Right Now; and Barbara Wilks (whose waterfront redevelopment in Troy is just getting underway) was named one of the Best Landscape Architects in New York by H&G Ideas.

Brooklyn’s Weeksville Heritage Center, designed by Sara Caples and her partner Everardo Jefferson, was recently featured on the FastCo Design blog; the Architect’s Newspaper recently looked at several innovative proposals for the future of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, including a green canopy by Colin Cathcart; Snøhetta, the Oslo-based firm led by Craig Dykers, was announced [pdf] last week as the winner of a design competition for the new Museum of Environmental Sciences in Guadalajara; Anthony Flint explored the world of PILOT programs in a piece at Crosscut; the Columbia Daily Spectator’s blog The Eye recently took a long hard look at the University’s plans for a new campus in Manhattanville, and Board member Maxine Griffith had plenty to say on the matter; ConstructionWeek recently spoke with Sudhir Jambhekar about his design for the KAFD Mosque in Riyadh (pictured at left); Moshe Safdie was selected to design a rather astoundingly-shaped apartment complex in Quinhuangdao, China; in case you missed the announcement in the Times this past weekend, Board Member Byron Stigge recently married Catherine Gaul at a ceremony in Manhattan; and Claire Weisz spoke to the FastCo Design team about her firm’s re-design of the Times Square Visitor Center in Manhattan.

The extension of the Queens Theatre-in-the-Park (pictured at left), designed by Sara Caples’ firm Caples Jefferson, was recently selected [pdf] as New York Construction’s Cultural Project of the Year; Ohio State University’s Knowlton School of Architecture recently honored Fellow Susan Chin with a Distinguished Alumnus Award for her work as the Assistant Commissioner for Capital Projects at the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs; Shane Coen’s Warroad Border Station was chosen by the 2010 GSA Design Awards jury for a Citation in Landscape Architecture, Honor Awards for Architecture and Engineering, and another Citation for Interior Design; and Bruce Fowle was presented with a trophy acknowledging FXFOWLE’s 15 years of involvement in the Canstruction NYC contest.

Institute fellow Sara Caples, Visiting Distinguished Professor at the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at the City College of New York, gave the opening lecture in the school’s fall Design Excellence series on Thursday, September 24th in the Sciame Auditorium. Institute board member Thom Mayne will lecture on November 5th.

Fellows, friends, and supporters of the Institute for Urban Design gathered at the New York studio of mOrphosis Architects to celebrate the new board of directors and chart an expansive next phase of critical urban engagement.
