Matt Blesso’s Blesso Properties is breaking ground on the Pavilion nightclub on Fire Island after it was destroyed in a November 2011 fire; only his second project in the UK, Patron Steven Holl will design a hospital for Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre; David Manfredi unveiled plans to redesign the Suffolk Downs racetrack in East Boston, adding a casino and resort; former New York Knick Clyde Frazier opened a restaurant in West Midtown designed by Board Member Thom Mayne’s Morphosis Architects (pictured at left); the nonprofit arm of John Palmieri’s Casino Reinvestment Development Authority will put on a video and light show to attract visitors to Atlantic City; Robert A.M. Stern will design the American Revolution Center in Philadelphia; Donna Walcavage served as the landscape architect for the newly open Polo Grounds Community Center in West Harlem.

In an interview with New York, Craig Dykers outlined Snøhetta’s proposal for a revamped Times Square; Princeton University submitted plans for their new Arts and Transit project, with work by Patron Steven Holl, to the Regional Planning Board of Princeton; the Boston Redevelopment Authority approved the development of a residential complex designed by David Manfredi (pictured above), one that will include micro-apartments, or so-called ‘innovation units’; Robert A.M. Stern will design a residential tower next to Hudson Yards.

On 3/6, Board Member Winka Dubbeldam celebrated the German launch of her recent book, Archi-Tectonics, with a party at the Berlin branch of Soho House; last Wednesday, 3/7, Board Member Enrique Norten gave a lecture at the Center for Architecture in New York entitled “This Will Kill That,” asking ‘What has happened to physical space in the age of mass media?’; today, Robert A.M. Stern participated in the commemoration ceremony for the Edward Durell Stone House on New York’s Upper East Side; Board Member Toni Griffin will speak on a panel about architecture, gender and space at the Brooklyn Museum (3/17); on 3/19 at UPenn, Michael Manfredi will present the evolution of the Diana Center at Barnard (pictured at left); a documentary about John Portman, entitled John Portman: A Life of Building, will screen at the Atlanta Film Festival on 3/26; Gregg Pasquarelli will deliver the Graduate Architecture Open House Lecture at the Sam Fox School at Washington University in St. Louis (3/30).

The NY Times spoke to Rick Bell about the planned expansion of the Center for Architecture, designed by Rob Rogers; the jury for a competition to re-design the Capitol Mall in Sacramento (pictured at left) included EE&K’s Peter David Cavaluzzi; the new book Beyond Shelter, published by Metropolis Books, features work by Jim Dart and Deborah Gans; the Architect’s Newspaper visited the newly-opened TASHAN restaurant in Philadelphia, designed by Board Member Winka Dubbeldam; ArchDaily recently posted a great video interview with Patron Steven Holl; today marks the start of construction on Board Member Enrique Norten’s new Rutgers Business School Building in Livingston, New Jersey; construction work on a new half-billion-dollar mixed-use complex designed by John Portman at the former site of the Shanghai Expo is just beginning in China’s largest city; IBM’s SmartPlanet.com took an in-depth look at the intricate facade of Matthias Sauerbruch’s KfW Westarkade in Frankfurt; Robert AM Stern’s George W. Director Ben Loeterman’s feature-length film about the life and work of John Portman, A Life of Building, will have its film festival premiere at the Architecture Film Festival in Rotterdam next week before making its way to New York for the Architecture and Design Film Festival later this month. PBS will broadcast Chicago affiliate WTTW’s documentary on Robert AM Stern (pictured at left) nationally on October 9th and 10th. Online, you can catch Board President Michael Sorkin discussing the World Trade Center rebuilding process in a Telegraph video feature, and a TalkingScience clip featuring Ernie Hutton on sustainability in New York City.

Fellows have launched a number of exciting new projects recently: Craig Dykers released the much-anticipated initial renderings of Snøhetta’s addition to SFMOMA’s iconic Mario Botta-designed building last week. Board Member Enrique Norten debuted his own set of renderings of the planned renovation of the Amparo Museum in Puebla, Mexico (pictured at left), and Robert A.M. Stern was announced as the architect of a new Chapel for the Ages at the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria. Meanwhile, just down I-95 in Richmond, Patron Steven Holl was tapped to design a new home for the Institute for Contemporary Art within days of revealing the design for a new university building in Bogotá.

At a design charrette focused on envisioning the future of the Drexel University campus, David Dixon asserted that “There has never been a more important time to think about the future of American universities”; the Empire State Tribune featured a great profile of Ronnette Riley, that’s full of fun quotes. Our favorite: “The great thing about architecture is that you don’t know you’re a failure until the end of your life”; Architectural Record has video of Robert AM Stern discussing 15 Central Park West (pictured at left) as it relates to the history of the New York City apartment house. Says Stern, of this very specific building typology: “When people talk about units, they’re in trouble. We talk about apartments“; and Rosemary Wakeman urged attendees at the Fordham-hosted Forum on Analytics to use data for social change, asking of the division between different schools of learning: “Can we get away from this hard/soft designation of where we are?”
