On Ground Zero

Our Fellows have been heavily involved in the reconstruction of Ground Zero–Michael Arad and Peter Walker designed the memorial, while Craig Dykers designed the adjacent museum pavilion, and Daniel Libeskind the master plan for the site. Reviews by Justin Davidson, Inga Saffron, and Christopher Hawthorne have appeared in advance of the memorial’s opening this September 11th. Libeskind’s role has also been the subject of some great coverage. Ethel Sheffer contributed an article, “Ground Zero a Decade Later,” to the most recent issue of Planning, Bloomberg Businessweek featured a cover story entitled “The Saving of Ground Zero,” and Architectural Record includes an extensive write-up on the site in their special feature “The Death and Life of a Great American City: New York 2001-2011.” Tomorrow, the Center for Architecture will host the conference Lower Manhattan Rising: Looking Toward 9/11/2021, which features an excellent line-up including Arad, Dykers, Libeskind, and several other Fellows: Rick Bell, Bruce Fowle, Ernest Hutton, Jack Nyman, and Donna Walcavage.

Open Cities 2010 Call for Partners

Rebuilding a Sustainable Haiti media partner Next American City recently issued a Call for Partners for their upcoming Open Cities 2010 conference, which will convene top federal urban policy officials, cutting edge designers and programmers, and leading think tank theorists in Washington, DC, for two days of discussion of the future of American cities. Upcoming: Planning For a Sustainable Future

On March 22nd, APA NY Metro Chapter and AIA NY will host a panel discussion called Planning for a Sustainable Future: Can We Achieve Integration at the Regional Level? The discussion will take place at 6:30pm at the Center for Architecture (536 LaGuardia Place, NYC). RSVP here.

Institute fellow Bissera Antikarov will serve as moderator along with Tom Jost, co-chairs of the APA NY Economic Development Committee.

Competition: Great Places Awards For Place Design, Planning, and Research

Places: Design Observer and EDRA, the Environmental Design Research Association, in cooperation with Metropolis Magazine announce the twelfth annual Great Places Awards for Place Design, Planning and Research competition. The deadline for entries is February 10, 2010.
