Thomas Balsley and Lyn Rice’s firms both won New York City’s Awards for Design Excellence for their respective projects, Phase 5 of Riverside South Park and Three Carriage Houses at the Staten Island Historical Society (pictured above); David Briggs’ Gowanus By Design announced their second Water_Works design competition, with Robert Rogers on the jury, to “explore water’s role in recreation, quotidian uses, and in contaminated urban environments.
At the request of the Noguchi Museum, the Architectural League recently hosted a design charrette about the museum’s ongoing “Civic Action: A Vision for Long Island City” project, now an installation at Socrates Sculpture Park (pictured above). The session centered on “how to sustain neighborhood vitality [in Long Island City] by capitalizing on distinctive characteristics rather than succumbing to the often homogenizing effects of mainstream real estate development.” Charrette participants included Andrew Bernheimer, Denise Hoffman Brandt, Deborah Gans, Lyn Rice, and Board Member Claire Weisz. The firms of Deborah Berke, John di Domenico, Lyn Rice and Ronnette Riley all received awards from the Society of American Registered Architects’ New York Council; the AIA Chicago will present this year’s lifetime achievement award to Helmut Jahn (pictured below in Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago).

SOM’s team lead—by Phil Enquist—was selected to develop the master plan for Beijing Bohai Innovation City (pictured at left); Reflections at Keppel Bayon, Daniel Libeskind’s first residential project in Asia, will open in Singapore on 3/22; Michael Manfredi’s firm has been selected to develop the master plan for the National Geographic Headquarters in D.C.; Lyn Rice’s firm Rice + Lipka will redesign the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit in conjunction with James Corner Field Operations.

Fisher’s CityWide program on CUNY-TV premieres at 10:00 AM on 10/20; Board President Michael Sorkin will speak about his work on the US pavilion at the Venice Biennale at the Architectural League’s Workshopping New York on 10/20; Ethel Sheffer and Sheena Wright will both participate in panels during the Municipal Art Society’s Summit for New York City on 10/21-22; Rodolfo Machado’s Bowdoin Museum of Art renovation is included in the Maine Modern exhibition at the Storefront for Architecture in Portland, ME, now through 10/31; Mattias Sauerbruch’s winning design for the M9 Museum (pictured at left) will be on view in Venice along with the other competition entries now through 11/21.
The show Innovate : Integrate, featuring Gregg Pasquarelli of SHoP’s design for the Barclays Center in Brooklyn (pictured at left), opened at the Center for Architecture in Manhattan on 10/6; Made In New York, AIANY’s 2010 Subway Exhibition, will open on 10/8 in the West 4th Street station in New York’s Greenwich Village, and will include the work of Lyn Rice; the Pratt Institute School of Architecture will host the symposium Voyage through Le Corbusier, with panelist Deborah Gans, on 10/11; the Municipal Arts Society’s Conference on Preservation and Climate Change in New York City, which includes a panel featuring Laurie Kerr, starts on 10/15; competing proposals by Patron Steven Holl and Fellow Craig Dykers (among others) for the Victoria & Albert Museum’s Dundee outpost are on view now through 11/4 in the show V&A Dundee – Making it Happen.
Honors were given at the San Francisco 2009 AIA Convention to the projects and firms of the following Institute fellows: Philip Enquist (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP) received the 2009 AIA Honor Award for Regional and Urban Design for Southworks Lakeside Chicago Development, Chicago / Bruce Fowle (FXFowle Architects) received the 2009 Institute Honor Awards for Architecture with Renzo Piano Building Workshop for The New York Times Building / Professor Steven N. Handel (Rutgers University) and board member Enrique Norten (TEN Arquitectos) received the 2009 AIA National Honor Award for Regional and Urban Design for the Orange County Great Park master plan, in California. This project also won the 2009 APA National Planning Excellence Award for Innovation in Regional Planning / Lyn Rice(Lyn Rice Architects) won the 2009 AIA Honor Awards for Interior Architecture for the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center in New York City / Donald J.
