Renderings of Ocean Dreams (pictured at left), a mixed-use complex of high-rises on the Coney Island Boardwalk designed by Richard Dattner’s firm, was unveiled; the April issue of Interior Design magazine features an eight-page spread on Board Member Winka Dubbeldam’s new Ports 1961 flagship in Shanghai; Executive Director Anne Guiney was interviewed about how changes in zoning and policy in New York are impacting the East Village; Alison Arieff called John Hartmann’s Bright Dawn Farm project “a glimmer of hope” for the future of suburbia in a New York Times Opinionator article on Droog’s recent Open House event in Levittown; the latest Architect magazine features a survey of national architecture policies by Board Member Cathy Lang Ho; construction is wrapping up on not one, but two new museums designed by Patron Steven Holl, in France and China; Board Member Enrique Norten’s zig-zagging Mercedes House tower opened in Manhattan; the New York Public Library kicked off construction on Lyn Rice’s Hamilton Grange Branch Teen Center; and Rob Rogers’ firm was named as one of five finalists in the competition to re-design DC’s Ellipse, in front of the White House.

Metropolis recently interviewed Gregory Baldwin about ZGF’s design for a piazza in downtown Portland, OR; the Wall Street Journal spoke with Carmi Bee about his Berry Street residential project in Brooklyn; Deborah Berke, who recently wrapped up work on the master plan for the ECLA in Berlin, was named one of Elle Decor’s Five Women in Design; Kenneth Drucker spoke to the Huffington Post about China’s plan to build 50 cities of one million people in the next two decades; Jamie Hand has accepted a new position as a Design Specialist at the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, DC; Board Member Cathy Lang Ho’s full review of the Venice Architecture Biennale is up at Architect; Helmut Jahn’s ambitious proposal for the revamp of Navy Pier (pictured at left) has been stirring up debate in the Windy City; Daniel Libeskind has been selected to design Finland’s second-largest arena; John Portman will design a new 250- to 500-room hotel as part of the $700MM expansion of the San Diego Convention Center; and Lyn Rice’s work on the New School’s Manhattan campus was featured in gb&d Magazine’s November issue (see p. 48).

Tonight (10/18) Lyn Rice will deliver the lecture “Everyday Rebel” at NJIT in Newark, NJ; Board Member Byron Stigge will speak at the Forum for Urban Design’s Eco-Cities event in Manhattan on 10/20; the October installment of Kenneth K. Fisher’s CityWide program on CUNY-TV premieres at 10:00 AM on 10/20; Board President Michael Sorkin will speak about his work on the US pavilion at the Venice Biennale at the Architectural League’s Workshopping New York on 10/20; Ethel Sheffer and Sheena Wright will both participate in panels during the Municipal Art Society’s Summit for New York City on 10/21-22; Rodolfo Machado’s Bowdoin Museum of Art renovation is included in the Maine Modern exhibition at the Storefront for Architecture in Portland, ME, now through 10/31; Mattias Sauerbruch’s winning design for the M9 Museum (pictured at left) will be on view in Venice along with the other competition entries now through 11/21.

The show Innovate : Integrate, featuring Gregg Pasquarelli of SHoP’s design for the Barclays Center in Brooklyn (pictured at left), opened at the Center for Architecture in Manhattan on 10/6; Made In New York, AIANY’s 2010 Subway Exhibition, will open on 10/8 in the West 4th Street station in New York’s Greenwich Village, and will include the work of Lyn Rice; the Pratt Institute School of Architecture will host the symposium Voyage through Le Corbusier, with panelist Deborah Gans, on 10/11; the Municipal Arts Society’s Conference on Preservation and Climate Change in New York City, which includes a panel featuring Laurie Kerr, starts on 10/15; competing proposals by Patron Steven Holl and Fellow Craig Dykers (among others) for the Victoria & Albert Museum’s Dundee outpost are on view now through 11/4 in the show V&A Dundee – Making it Happen.

Honors were given at the San Francisco 2009 AIA Convention to the projects and firms of the following Institute fellows: Philip Enquist (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP) received the 2009 AIA Honor Award for Regional and Urban Design for Southworks Lakeside Chicago Development, Chicago / Bruce Fowle (FXFowle Architects) received the 2009 Institute Honor Awards for Architecture with Renzo Piano Building Workshop for The New York Times Building / Professor Steven N. Handel (Rutgers University) and board member Enrique Norten (TEN Arquitectos) received the 2009 AIA National Honor Award for Regional and Urban Design for the Orange County Great Park master plan, in California. This project also won the 2009 APA National Planning Excellence Award for Innovation in Regional Planning / Lyn Rice(Lyn Rice Architects) won the 2009 AIA Honor Awards for Interior Architecture for the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center in New York City / Donald J. Stastny, FAIA, FAICP (StastnyBrun Architects) was the recipient of the 2009 AIA Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture / Andrew Whalley (Grimshaw Architects) received the 2009 AIA Honor Awards for Architecture for Horno3: Museo del Acero, Monterey, Mexico

Fellows Form Housing Research Committee

A group of Institute fellows, Viren Brahmbhatt, Peter Brassard, Meta Brunzema, Renee Kaufman, Linda Pollak, Lyn Rice, Thor Snilsberg, and Claire Weisz, have formed a fellows’ research ad hoc committee with the goal of assessing the state of housing in the US and proposing sustainable development strategies.
