Archtober kicks off today with the opening of three new exhibitions at the Center for Architecture in New York, including Buildings = Energy, for which Colin Cathcart, Bruce Fowle, and Laurie Kerr all served on the Advisory Committee. The IfUD is hosting a book talk on the High Line with Founder Ann Ferebee and Jeff Byles next Friday (10/7) from 12:00-1:00 PM, and we hope to see you there! Many Fellows will be participating in other events during the month-long festival: Kerr and Richard Dattner will both speak at the symposium When Green is not an Option but the Law! on 10/3; Deborah Gans will speak on, and Lance Jay Brown will moderate, the panel VisioNYC 2080: Towards a Risk-Resilient City on 10/6; and Cathcart will give a presentation on “Furry Buildings” at the conference High-Performance Landscapes: People, Places, Plants on 10/21. Congratulations to all three of the Fellows who will be honored next week at the AIANY’s 144th Annual Meeting: Daniel Libeskind with the Medal of Honor, Charles McKinney with an Honorary Membership, and Laurie Kerr with the Public Architect Award; and in the last update we announced that Richard Dattner would be receiving a 2010 Design Award from the City of New York’s Public Design Commission at a ceremony on June 20th; we’ve since learned that Deborah Berke will also be honored with a Design Award for the 122CC Community Arts Center project, and Patron Steven Holl will be honored for the Hunter’s Point Community Library. SOM Chicago principal Philip Enquist will speak about ‘The Endless City’ at Penn Design’s 2011 commencement ceremony on 5/16; Rick Bell and Laurie Kerr will both participate in Fit City 6 at the Center for Architecture on 5/17; Lance Jay Brown will participate in the Better City/Better Life: North-South Initiative symposium at the United Nations Headquarters in Manhattan on 5/18; a reception for the exhibit Downtown Brooklyn Commons [PDF], featuring design proposals from the Rus en Urbe studio led by CCNY’s Denise Hoffman Brandt, Elisabetta Terragni, and Barbara Wilks, with a model created in charette with Michael Sorkin’s graduate urban design studio, will take place at Brooklyn Borough Hall on 5/19; Deborah Berke will speak at the Miller House Symposium in Columbus, Indiana on 5/20 (the titular modernist residence is pictured at left); Peter D. Said Bruce Fowle, president-elect of the National Academy Museum and School, on the recovery and re-opening of that once-threatened institution: “The doors are reopening on a whole other world there;” in a recent article on the many ways in which New York City is attempting to become a cleaner and greener place, AM New York spoke with Laurie Kerr (pictured at left), who noted that “Buildings have an enormous impact on the environment; building codes should reflect that;” and speaking of her involvement in the aforementioned Riverside Center project in The Villager, Ethel Sheffer noted that it was getting involved with her Community Board that led her to become a professional planner: “You have to become citizen experts.”

Wanda Bubriski jumped into the public debate surrounding Architect Barbie at BWAF’s new blog; a recent CNN feature on urban agriculture included two projects by Colin Cathcart; Anthony Flint (whose Wrestling With Moses has been garnering fresh attention lately) wrote an article for Boston.com on Ben and Jane Thompson’s storied Design Research store in Cambridge, calling Jane’s new book on DR’s history “wonderful”; a developer announced plans for a floating marina complex (pictured at left), designed by Carlo Frugiuele, on the Jersey City waterfront; Ken Greenberg is working on a plan for the pedestrianization of part of Toronto’s famed Yonge Street; Board Member Toni Griffin and Fellow June Williamson both contributed to a Times Room for Debate feature on “the Incredible Shrinking City”; John Hoal is leading a six-team visioning process for St. Louis’ Ackert Walkway; Stephen Holl talked to the Scotland Herald about his Glasgow School of Art project, which was unanimously approved by the city; Olympia Kazi’s Van Alen Institute has been busy, announcing the mid-April opening of its design bookstore in Manhattan and launching the Life at the Speed of Rail design competition, the jury for which will include IfUD Board Member Thom Mayne; Treehugger talked to Laurie Kerr about NYC’s pioneering Local Law 84; the Architect’s Newspaper posted video of Gregg Pasquarelli discussing SHoP’s design for the Botswana Innovation Hub; Rob Rogers’ firm Rogers Marvel will handle restoration work on Manhattan’s Pier A, which will become a retail and event space; and Metropolis visited Andrew Whalley at Grimshaw Industrial Design’s new Chelsea office.

The show Innovate : Integrate, featuring Gregg Pasquarelli of SHoP’s design for the Barclays Center in Brooklyn (pictured at left), opened at the Center for Architecture in Manhattan on 10/6; Made In New York, AIANY’s 2010 Subway Exhibition, will open on 10/8 in the West 4th Street station in New York’s Greenwich Village, and will include the work of Lyn Rice; the Pratt Institute School of Architecture will host the symposium Voyage through Le Corbusier, with panelist Deborah Gans, on 10/11; the Municipal Arts Society’s Conference on Preservation and Climate Change in New York City, which includes a panel featuring Laurie Kerr, starts on 10/15; competing proposals by Patron Steven Holl and Fellow Craig Dykers (among others) for the Victoria & Albert Museum’s Dundee outpost are on view now through 11/4 in the show V&A Dundee – Making it Happen.

Institute fellows gathered at the New York Center for Architecture for the third fellows’ Breakfast Club, chaired by Institute fellow Laurie Kerr, Senior Policy Advisor at NYC Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability, who led the discussion on the “greening” of New York City’s building code.
