The Dempsey (pictured at left), a sustainable, affordable housing complex in Harlem designed by Richard Dattner’s firm, celebrated its opening; the University of Massachusetts has announced that David Manfredi’s Elkus Manfredi will design a new bioprocessing center for their Dartmouth campus; India saw the opening of its first Park Hyatt hotel, located in Hyderabad and developed by John Portman & Associates; Board Member Claire Weisz and her WXY Architecture + Urban Design have been chosen as lead designers for the East River Blueway, a community-based waterfront planning initiative in Manhattan.

On 3/6, Board Member Winka Dubbeldam celebrated the German launch of her recent book, Archi-Tectonics, with a party at the Berlin branch of Soho House; last Wednesday, 3/7, Board Member Enrique Norten gave a lecture at the Center for Architecture in New York entitled “This Will Kill That,” asking ‘What has happened to physical space in the age of mass media?’; today, Robert A.M. Stern participated in the commemoration ceremony for the Edward Durell Stone House on New York’s Upper East Side; Board Member Toni Griffin will speak on a panel about architecture, gender and space at the Brooklyn Museum (3/17); on 3/19 at UPenn, Michael Manfredi will present the evolution of the Diana Center at Barnard (pictured at left); a documentary about John Portman, entitled John Portman: A Life of Building, will screen at the Atlanta Film Festival on 3/26; Gregg Pasquarelli will deliver the Graduate Architecture Open House Lecture at the Sam Fox School at Washington University in St. Louis (3/30).

An Architect Drawing, the first of two exhibits of Theo. David’s work to be staged at the Pratt Institute this spring, opens on 2/17; that same day, Lance Jay Brown will moderate, and David Dixon will participate in, the Center for Architecture panel Climate Change: Inevitable Challenges and Potential Opportunities; there are just a few days left to see Toronto’s STITCHES: Suzhou Fast Forward exhibit (pictured at left), curated by Larry Wayne Richards, before it closes on 2/18; the documentary John Portman: A Life of Building will be shown on 2/22 as part of the Palm Springs Modernism Week festival; Laurie Kerr will moderate the opening panel at the second annual Conference on Sustainable Real Estate, hosted by NYU’s Schack Institute, on 2/23; and also in New York on the 23rd, Executive Director Anne Guiney will moderate a panel at Megacities and Meta-Cities, a day-long symposium at Studio-X organized by David Grahame Shane. Also, looking forward to two events in April: early-bird registration for the 2012 Banff Session in Alberta, featuring a keynote by Craig Dykers, ends tomorrow; and tickets for AIANY’s 2012 Honors & Awards Luncheon, which will take place at Cipriani Wall Street, have just gone on sale–Rick Bell and David Ziskind are both on the planning committee for this year’s ceremony.

Bentonville’s 21c Museum Hotel, designed by Deborah Berke, broke ground last month; Urban Omnibus visited Matthew Berman’s BLDG 92 museum and visitors center at the Brooklyn Navy Yard; Andrew Bernheimer and his sister Kate, an award-winning fairy tale author, collaborated on a three-part series of posts at Places Journal that gives architectural form to famous fairy tale houses; Matt Blesso and Mark Gardner were both interviewed as part of openhousenewyork’s “I Am OHNY” series; NYC Media released a video extolling the virtues of Colin Cathcart’s Greenhouse Project at Manhattan’s P.S. 333; the first renderings of a curvaceous new Maggie’s Centre in Aberdeen, Scotland, designed by Craig Dykers, made a splash; Vince Ferrandino is leading the effort to build a solid transition team for Mount Vernon, New York’s mayor-elect Ernie Davis; Mary Margaret Jones led a public forum on Hargreaves Associates’ new plan for Richmond’s James Riverfront; John Portman has opened a new office in Hong Kong–his fourth in Asia, after Shanghai, Seoul, and Mumbai; and it’s not every day that you can see a Fellow’s work in a big-screen blockbuster, but the ASLA’s The Dirt recently pointed out that John Wong’s Burj Khalifa Park has something of a “starring role” in the new Mission Impossible movie!

The AIA’s New York chapter, led by Rick Bell, has just put out the call for entries for the 2012 AIANY Design Awards (deadline: 2/3/12); Francis Cauffman, led by James Crispino, has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing A/E/C industry firms on ZweigWhite’s annual Hot Firms List; Patron Steven Holl was named as the winner of the prestigious 2012 AIA Gold Medal; SOM’s Chicago Office, where Philip Enquist is the Partner in Charge of Urban Design and Planning, received AIA Chicago’s Firm of the Year award; Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin included the opening of Helmut Jahn’s Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago (pictured at left) in his round-up of the best architecture of 2011; Board Member Enrique Norten will serve as a juror for this year’s Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award, which will focus on Cape Town, South Africa (deadline: 2/24/12); AmericasMart founder John Portman will receive a special honor, the “Legend for Life” award, in recognition of his five decades of entrepreneurship and service to the home decor industry; Board Member Saskia Sassen made Foreign Policy magazine’s list of the Top 100 Global Thinkers for her “passionate advocacy of an urban-based society”; and the undergraduate program at the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture, led by Frederick Steiner, was ranked second in the nation by DesignIntelligence.

At the Waterfront Center Awards, Thomas Balsley was presented with an Honor Award for Manhattan’s Riverside Park South Waterfront (pictured at left), and his Gantry State Plaza State Park project in Queens was given a tribute for its 1999 Top Honor Award; Douglas Durst was presented with the “Green God” award at the New York Restoration Project’s Hulaween gala last week; John Portman was named an Industry Fellow at this year’s American Furniture Hall of Fame banquet; and Michael Stepner was presented with the Society of American Registered Architects’ Synergy Award.

Director Ben Loeterman’s feature-length film about the life and work of John Portman, A Life of Building, will have its film festival premiere at the Architecture Film Festival in Rotterdam next week before making its way to New York for the Architecture and Design Film Festival later this month. PBS will broadcast Chicago affiliate WTTW’s documentary on Robert AM Stern (pictured at left) nationally on October 9th and 10th. Online, you can catch Board President Michael Sorkin discussing the World Trade Center rebuilding process in a Telegraph video feature, and a TalkingScience clip featuring Ernie Hutton on sustainability in New York City.
