Weighing in on the Loci Architecture blog about the contentious debate regarding NYU’s expansion in Greenwich Village, David Briggs questions if new buildings could strike a balance with the existing community; in the latest issue of The Architect’s Newspaper, Jeff Byles profiles Meta Brunzema’s “Building Exhibition Hudson Valley/Erie Canal” project; Susan Chin wrote an op-ed for the New York Observer about the Design Trust for Public Space’s collaboration on the “Taxi of Tomorrow”; also in Design Trust news, the organization’s “Made in Midtown” project is featured in the newly released book, Designing for Social Change; an HOK team led by Ken Drucker is a finalist to design the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at SUNY-Buffalo; work done for Marc Jacobs by Mark Gardner and Stephan Jaklitsch’s firm is profiled in Interior Design (pictured above); Laurie Kerr discussed cutting building energy use for an article by the Urban Land Institute; Lebbeus Woods published an extensive transcript of his conversation with Board Member Thom Mayne; Mercedes House, a new residential building by Board Member Enrique Norten, was profiled in The Real Deal; Grahame Shane wrote an article in Bauwelt magazine about restoring the urban dream through affordable housing; Don Stastny oversaw a competition to redesign Austin’s downtown Waller Creek, with Robert Rogers’ firm coming in as a finalist.

The State Department’s Bureau of Overseas Building Operations shortlisted Craig Dykers’ Snøhetta and Board Member Thom Mayne’s Morphosis to design the New Embassy Compound in Mexico City; RPA Fellow Alex Marshall reviewed Institute Founder Ann Ferebee and Jeff Byles’ recent book, A History of Design from the Victorian Era to the Present; Anthony Flint reported on the annual TED conference and Prize winner, ‘The City 2.0′; Board Chair Michael Sorkin’s New York City Steady State plan (pictured at left) was profiled on the green design blog, inhabitat; and for the blog of the BMW Guggenheim Lab, June Williamson wrote about ‘Retrofitting for Fecundity’ and her speculative retrofit of a big-box center in L.A.

Archtober kicks off today with the opening of three new exhibitions at the Center for Architecture in New York, including Buildings = Energy, for which Colin Cathcart, Bruce Fowle, and Laurie Kerr all served on the Advisory Committee. The IfUD is hosting a book talk on the High Line with Founder Ann Ferebee and Jeff Byles next Friday (10/7) from 12:00-1:00 PM, and we hope to see you there! Many Fellows will be participating in other events during the month-long festival: Kerr and Richard Dattner will both speak at the symposium When Green is not an Option but the Law! on 10/3; Deborah Gans will speak on, and Lance Jay Brown will moderate, the panel VisioNYC 2080: Towards a Risk-Resilient City on 10/6; and Cathcart will give a presentation on “Furry Buildings” at the conference High-Performance Landscapes: People, Places, Plants on 10/21. On 8/24, IfUD Founder Ann Ferebee and Jeff Byles will speak about their book, A History of Design from the Victorian Era to the Present, at the NYPL’s Mid-Manhattan branch; another previous IfUD Director, Olympia Kazi, recently launched the Van Alen Institute’s Parks for the People student design competition, with a deadline of 11/1; and Glimpses 2040, an exhibit featuring work (pictured at left) by Barbara Wilks, and recently reviewed in the Times and The L Magazine, will remain on view at the Center for Architecture through 9/10.

IfUD Founder Ann Ferebee and Fellow Jeff Byles spoke recently at Manhattan’s 92nd Street Y about their new revised version of Ferebee’s book, A History of Design From the Victorian Era to the Present, which can be purchased now at WW Norton’s website. They’ll be speaking again, downtown this time, at the Skyscraper Museum on August 2nd. This one’s not to be missed!

Both Linda Pollak and Andy Bernheimer will serve as judges for the Architectural League’s Sketch 120: Greenpoint Edition tomorrow  afternoon (4/16); Craig Dykers and Board Member Maxine Griffith (pictured at left) will both speak at Colubmbia University’s GSAPP Alumni Weekend (4/16-17); Denise Hoffman Brandt will give a lecture on her City Sink project at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on 4/18; Anthony Flint will speak at TEDxTampaBay on 4/19; Bernheimer will speak on 4/20 at Ohio State University’s Knowlton School of Architecture; Jeff Byles will participate in a panel discussion at the Ineffably Urban symposium in Buffalo on 4/30; and the newly-launched Studio-X Rio de Janeiro has opened with an exhibit featuring work by Galia Solomonoff.

Peter Walker will be in Corona Del Mar, CA, on 2/1 to give a public lecture on the landscape elements of plans for the Newport Beach Civic Project; Sheena Wright will be a special guest lecturer at the Town of Hempstead, NYs African American History Month celebration on 2/8; Fellow Jeff Byles will discuss “unbuilding” with IfUD Board President Michael Sorkin in the Woolworth Building (pictured at left) on 2/9 as part of the LMCC’s Access Restricted series; Richard Sennett will give a talk about his new book at Schauspiel Frankfurt on 2/9; and John Hartmann’s “Light Hearted” will be unveiled in Times Square on 2/10.
