In a recent piece about the Barclays Center arena (pictured at left) in the NY Daily News, Gregg Pasquarelli explained that “We wanted it to be something very different from [Madison Square] Garden…[which is] a giant, impenetrable box.” Speaking of the Cooper Union, Board Chair Michael Sorkin enthused: “These are students who unreservedly pursue what I call the ‘Poetics of Architecture,’ which is a rare thing nowadays. The combination of beauty and weirdness that’s produced at Cooper is like no place else on earth.” And at a community meeting about the Waller Creek design competition in Austin, competition manager Don Stastny noted that “It’s rare that you have an opportunity to basically change the face of the city through one of these processes.”

The Wall Street Journal spoke to Richard Dattner about his design for a new salt shed in Manhattan’s Hudson Square neighborhood (pictured at left); Board Member Winka Dubbeldam has been quite popular at New York magazine lately — the publication  featured a slideshow of her design for singer John Legend’s new Bowery apartment, as well as a fascinating debate between Winka, Fellows Gregg Pasquarelli and Robert A.M. Stern, and several other NYC luminaries on the city’s greatest building; the New York Times looked at Phil Enquist’s master plan for the redevelopment of a massive former US Steel complex on Chicago’s South Shore; Vince Ferrandino was interviewed by WestfairOnline as part of a special report on civic leadership; Architectural Record announced that Daniel Libeskind will design a mixed-use complex on the mainland side of a bridge connecting Sicily to the Italian peninsula; David Manfredi presented his firm’s plans for Kendall Square at a community meeting in Cambridge; Architect took a look at Moshe Safdie’s Marina Bay Sands complex; and Curbed featured a sizable set of images of Claire Weisz’s recently-unveiled plans for Manhattan’s Astor Place/Cooper Square area.

Tom Angotti recently took a peek behind the curtain at NYC’s powerful Economic Development Corp. in the Gotham Gazette; Hillary Brown explored the future of post-industrial public infrastructure projects in a recent Design Observer piece; green megablog Inhabitat interviewed Patron Steven Holl about sustainable architecture; Board Member Thom Mayne’s 41 Cooper Square (pictured at left) was recently awarded LEED Platinum certification; John Portman’s firm was announced by the Georgia DOT as one of five finalists competing to develop a new transit hub in downtown Atlanta; Tablet Magazine profiled Moshe Safdie, dubbing the architect a Master Builder; Board Member Saskia Sassen responded to the Foreign Policy’s 2010 Global Cities Index with some hard-hitting questions; and Claire Weisz’s firm WXY Architecture was profiled [pdf] in the Architect’s Newspaper.

International Architecture Award Winners Announced

The Institute’s membership is well-represented in the list of recipients for the 2010 International Architecture Awards. Honorees include Patron Steven Holl for the Herning Museum of Contemporary Art and the Knut Hamsun Center; Board Member Thom Mayne for the Cooper Union’s 41 Cooper Square building; Fellow Michael Manfredi’s Weiss/Manfredi Architects for the Wandering Ecologies project in Toronto (pictured at left); Fellow Craig Dykers’ firm Snøhetta for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet; and Fellow Bruce Fowle’s firm FXFOWLE for the Nordhaven City Regeneration project and SAP North America complex. The awards are administered annually by the Chicago Athenaeum and the European Center for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies.

Benepe, Burden, and Burney to Discuss Design in New York

This session will bring together the heads of three of New York City’s most design-conscious departments: Adrian Benepe (Parks), Amanda Burden (Planning), and David Burney (Design and Construction). Michael Sorkin to Discuss The City We Imagined, The City We Made

IfUD board chair Michael Sorkin will join designer Alex Garvin and Architectural League of New York executive director Rosalie Genevro today, June 17, at 7:00 PM for the first of a series of conversations based on The City We Imagined, The City We Made exhibit. The discussion will take place in the Rose Auditorium at the Cooper Union. Tickets will cost $10 per person, and can be purchased here until 3:00 PM this afternoon.

Rebuilding a Sustainable Haiti: Photo Album

 style=On June 4, 2010, the Institute convened architects, planners, public health specialists, representatives from NGOs, and government officials from both Haiti and the United States for the Rebuilding a Sustainable Haiti symposium at the Cooper Union’s Rose Auditorium to identify specific needs in the Haitian recovery effort, and develop an action plan to address them. Almost 200 people attended the symposium from around the US, and the world, with attendees coming from as far afield as Spain and Sri Lanka. A big thanks goes out to everyone who made it out for the event! Images are now available on the Institute’s Facebook page, so go take a look!

Thomas Balsley and Charles McKinney Discuss Civic Design Excellence
