The Vanishing City, a new film on the gentrification of Manhattan, featuring interviews with Tom Angotti and Board Member Saskia Sassen, opened the Staten Island Film Festival; Angotti also spoke to the NY Daily News about his new research project at Hunter College trying to repurpose vacant residential units to shrink rates of homelessness; Mimi Zeiger profiled Thomas Balsley in the latest Landscape Architecture Magazine [PDF]; Jim Dart wrote briefly about progress on the Great Falls Arts + Revitalization Initiative at the Great Falls National Park in Paterson, NJ, a project that also involves Darius Sollohub and Claire Weisz; in nearby Nutley, NJ, Ken Drucker is designing a new pedestrian bridge at the Hoffman La Roche corporate campus; the Museum of Fine Arts Houston announced a shortlist of three firms for its planned expansion: Craig Dykers’ Snøhetta, Patron Steven Holl’s eponymous firm, and Board Member Thom Mayne’s Morphosis; hot off an interview with the Montreal Gazette, Ken Greenberg penned a requiem for a pedestrian bridge proposed in Toronto; Matthias Sauerbruch’s design for an office building on London’s Old Bailey (pictured at left) has been approved; and the Drawing Center has just launched a capital plan for their Claire Weisz-designed expansion.

In a recent profile, Moshe Safdie (whose design for a waterfront tower in Toronto made a big splash last week) explained the genesis of his career thusly: “I proposed a habitat – a sort of a fairy tale – and it got approved and built. That was the beginning of my professional practice”; in a Times article on the Met’s new Moroccan coutryard, architect Achva Benzinberg Stein explained that “This is like the culmination of a life’s work for me. To me it means the possibility of so many things, of peace”; and in the Architect’s Newspaper’s profile of WXY Architecture, Claire Weisz described the firm’s dynamic style in no uncertain terms: “We do believe in a certain amount of excess…Sometimes ‘too much’ is good.”

Board Member Byron Stigge will speak at the Out of Water conference in Toronto, from 4/1-2; Denise Hoffman Brandt will speak at the Next Eco-City symposium in Seattle on 4/7-8; Board Member Winka Dubbeldam will speak at the Progressive Architecture Symposium in Mexico City, also on 4/7-8; Deborah Gans will discuss her work on the new stained glass window at Manhattan’s Eldridge Street Synagogue on 4/8; Mark Strauss will participate in a panel on the 3 Rs of the New Economy at the APA National Conference in Boston on 4/10; Richard Sennett (pictured at left) will deliver the 7th Annual Lewis Mumford Lecture on Urbanism at CCNY on 4/11; the AIA Design Awards Luncheon, which will honor IfUD Patron Steven Holl, Fellows Bruce Fowle and Claire Weisz, and Board Member Thom Mayne, will take place at Cipriani Wall Street on 4/12; and the new exhibit Façade: Through a Glass Darkly, featuring two buildings by Matthias Sauerbruch, will be on view at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, UK, now through 7/10.
Four Fellows Win AIA Design Awards

The Institute is well-represented on the list of winners of this year’s AIANY Design Awards: Patron Steven Holl received an Honor Award in Architecture for the Horizontal Skyscraper project in Shenzhen; Board Member Thom Mayne’s Phare Tower design in Paris (pictured at left) was recognized in the Unbuilt Work category; Fellow Bruce Fowle’s FXFOWLE scored two awards, both in New York with partners Diller Scofidio + Renfro (in Architecture for the Hypar Pavilion and in Urban Design for the Lincoln Center Public Spaces); and Claire Weisz for the NYC Information Center in Times Square. All honorees will be recognized at an award luncheon at Cipriani Wall Street on April 12th, 2011.

Claire Weisz will participate in a panel discussion, to be moderated by Wanda Bubriski, on Emily Roebling’s role in the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge tonight (3/15) in New York; Weisz will also speak at the New Museum tomorrow (3/16) as part of the Architectural League of New York’s Emerging Voices series; Gretchen Bank will lead a Marketing & PR seminar for the AIANY’s Architects’ Fast-Track Leadership Series on 3/23; a traveling exhibit of work by Craig Dykers’ Snøhetta has just landed at Lisbon’s Musea de Electricidade; and the exhibit “Alessi: Ethical and Radical,” featuring items designed by Patron Robert Venturi, opened recently at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where it will remain on view until 4/10.

Developer Douglas Durst revealed the hotly-anticipated renderings of his W57 development (pictured at left), which is being designed by Danish rising star Bjarke Ingels; Nicolai Ouroussoff wrote a rave review in the Times for Patron Steven Holl’s design for a new Long Island City library; Chicago Tribune critic Blair Kamin spoke with Helmut Jahn about the unique pleasures and perils of airport terminal design; the University of Pennsylvania recently broke ground on the Michael Manfredi-designed Krishna P. Singh Center for Nanotechnology; Kate Orff’s “oyster-tecture” project has been popping up everywhere recently: in Grist, the Guardian, Metropolis, the PSFK blog, and on TED.com; Gregg Pasquarelli’s SHoP Architects was named as the architect of the first residential tower at Brooklyn’s Atlantic Yards megadevelopment; Board Member Saskia Sassen made a splash with the cheekily-titled (and highly-enjoyable) article “Talking back to your intelligent city”; and the Architect’s Newspaper took a virtual walk through Claire Weisz’s plans for the revamp of NYC’s Cooper Square/Astor Place, while the Times announced Weisz as the architect for an expansion of Soho’s Drawing Center.

The Wall Street Journal spoke to Richard Dattner about his design for a new salt shed in Manhattan’s Hudson Square neighborhood (pictured at left); Board Member Winka Dubbeldam has been quite popular at New York magazine lately — the publication featured a slideshow of her design for singer John Legend’s new Bowery apartment, as well as a fascinating debate between Winka, Fellows Gregg Pasquarelli and Robert A.M. Stern, and several other NYC luminaries on the city’s greatest building; the New York Times looked at Phil Enquist’s master plan for the redevelopment of a massive former US Steel complex on Chicago’s South Shore; Vince Ferrandino was interviewed by WestfairOnline as part of a special report on civic leadership; Architectural Record announced that Daniel Libeskind will design a mixed-use complex on the mainland side of a bridge connecting Sicily to the Italian peninsula; David Manfredi presented his firm’s plans for Kendall Square at a community meeting in Cambridge; Architect took a look at Moshe Safdie’s Marina Bay Sands complex; and Curbed featured a sizable set of images of Claire Weisz’s recently-unveiled plans for Manhattan’s Astor Place/Cooper Square area.
