Mayne & Griffin Speak at MICD’s 25th Anniversary Conference

Board Member Thom Mayne (pictured at left) was invited to give the opening keynote at the 25th Anniversary meeting of the Mayors Institute on City Design in Chicago on April 27th. Another member of our Board of Directors, Toni Griffin, also addressed this prestigious gathering of mayors from across the United States. Stern Elected to Academy of Arts & Letters, Profiled on WTTW

Fellow Robert A.M. Stern was elected to become a member of the the American Academy of Arts & Letters. Stern was also selected to receive the 2011 Driehaus Prize last fall; to mark the recent presentation of that award, journalist Geoffrey Baer profiled the architect for Chicago’s WTTW.

Developer Douglas Durst revealed the hotly-anticipated renderings of his W57 development (pictured at left), which is being designed by Danish rising star Bjarke Ingels; Nicolai Ouroussoff wrote a rave review in the Times for Patron Steven Holl’s design for a new Long Island City library; Chicago Tribune critic Blair Kamin spoke with Helmut Jahn about the unique pleasures and perils of airport terminal design; the University of Pennsylvania recently broke ground on the Michael Manfredi-designed Krishna P. Singh Center for Nanotechnology; Kate Orff’s “oyster-tecture” project has been popping up everywhere recently: in Grist, the Guardian, Metropolis, the PSFK blog, and on TED.com; Gregg Pasquarelli’s SHoP Architects was named as the architect of the first residential tower at Brooklyn’s Atlantic Yards megadevelopment; Board Member Saskia Sassen made a splash with the cheekily-titled (and highly-enjoyable) article “Talking back to your intelligent city”; and the Architect’s Newspaper took a virtual walk through Claire Weisz’s plans for the revamp of NYC’s Cooper Square/Astor Place, while the Times announced Weisz as the architect for an expansion of Soho’s Drawing Center.

The Wall Street Journal spoke to Richard Dattner about his design for a new salt shed in Manhattan’s Hudson Square neighborhood (pictured at left); Board Member Winka Dubbeldam has been quite popular at New York magazine lately — the publication  featured a slideshow of her design for singer John Legend’s new Bowery apartment, as well as a fascinating debate between Winka, Fellows Gregg Pasquarelli and Robert A.M. Stern, and several other NYC luminaries on the city’s greatest building; the New York Times looked at Phil Enquist’s master plan for the redevelopment of a massive former US Steel complex on Chicago’s South Shore; Vince Ferrandino was interviewed by WestfairOnline as part of a special report on civic leadership; Architectural Record announced that Daniel Libeskind will design a mixed-use complex on the mainland side of a bridge connecting Sicily to the Italian peninsula; David Manfredi presented his firm’s plans for Kendall Square at a community meeting in Cambridge; Architect took a look at Moshe Safdie’s Marina Bay Sands complex; and Curbed featured a sizable set of images of Claire Weisz’s recently-unveiled plans for Manhattan’s Astor Place/Cooper Square area.

Robert A.M. Stern Announced as Dreihaus Laureate

Fellow Robert A.M. Stern has been named as the winner of the 2010 Dreihaus Prize for Classical Architecture. Stern will be presented with this prestigious award (trophy pictured at left) during a ceremony in Chicago on March 26.

Line of Fire, an exhibit of menorahs designed by Daniel Libeskind, opened recently at the Jewish Museum in New York, where it will remain on view through 1/30/11; the Architectural League of New York announced the jury for their competition It’s Different, which will include Michael Manfredi and Board Member Thom Mayne; speaking of Mr. Mayne, Thom is in the midst of a cross-continental lecture tour in Australia, speaking this evening (12/15/10) in Melbourne and tomorrow (12/16/10) in Perth; and finally, a reminder that Las Vegas Studio, an exhibit of photos from the archives of Patrons Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, is on view in Chicago through 2/19/11. Metropolis recently interviewed Gregory Baldwin about ZGF’s design for a piazza in downtown Portland, OR; the Wall Street Journal spoke with Carmi Bee about his Berry Street residential project in Brooklyn; Deborah Berke, who recently wrapped up work on the master plan for the ECLA in Berlin, was named one of Elle Decor‘s Five Women in Design; Kenneth Drucker spoke to the Huffington Post about China’s plan to build 50 cities of one million people in the next two decades; Jamie Hand has accepted a new position as a Design Specialist at the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, DC; Board Member Cathy Lang Ho’s full review of the Venice Architecture Biennale is up at Architect; Helmut Jahn’s ambitious proposal for the revamp of Navy Pier (pictured at left) has been stirring up debate in the Windy City; Daniel Libeskind has been selected to design Finland’s second-largest arena; John Portman will design a new 250- to 500-room hotel as part of the $700MM expansion of the San Diego Convention Center; and Lyn Rice’s work on the New School’s Manhattan campus was featured in gb&d Magazine‘s November issue (see p. 48).

Water flowed for the first time last week at the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero (pictured at left), designed by Michael Arad and Peter Walker, during a brief test of the 30-foot-tall waterfalls; Philip Enquist was recently interviewed by ArchDaily about his work as the lead urban designer at SOM’s Chicago headquarters; the Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA, celebrated the opening of their Chadwick Floyd-designed addition just yesterday; this month’s issue of Landscape Architecture magazine features a cover story on Nancy Owens’ North Park project in Fort Totten, Queens [PDF]; Claire Weisz’s WXY Architects was named one of eleven finalists in a competition to design a new bridge near Brown University in Providence, RI; and Henry M. White, III, was recently honored for his work on the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway in New Jersey.

The Association of Architecture Organizations’ 2010 Annual Conference, Design In Action, will feature a talk by Rick Bell today, 11/15, in Chicago; Shane Coen (pictured at left) will deliver the lecture “Context Informs Form” at Harvard’s GSD on 11/17; IfUD friend Mary Miss will be honored at the NY-ASLA President’s Dinner on 11/18; the recently-opened Nordic Models + Common Ground, an exhibition of contemporary Nordic art and design curated by Craig Dykers’ firm Snøhetta, will be on view at Scandanavia House in Midtown Manhattan through 3/9/11.
