stillspotting nyc, organized by David van der Leer and the Guggenheim, was offered last Saturday and Sunday in Staten Island; the “Civic Action” installation at Socrates Sculpture Park, including work by Mary Miss (pictured above), closed on Sunday; Kaja Kuhl hosts the last of this season’s workshops at her Phytoremediation Lab in the South Bronx on 8/11; an exhibit organized by Phil Enquist is on now through 8/31 at the Chicago River Museum, showcasing proposals for waterfront improvements along the river’s south branch.

Matt Blesso spoke to the Wall Street Journal and New York Times about blending city and country on his Manhattan rooftop; Richard Dattner’s 1960s playground designs feature prominently in a Cabinet magazine article; Phil Enquist spoke with Chicago radio station WBEZ about the future of the Chicago River, one he hopes includes fishing and swimming; Architectural Record investigated how Michael Manfredi and Marion Weiss’ Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center uses earth and plants to amplify its design; also according to Architectural Record, Rob Rogers and Jonathan Marvel are ‘hitting their stride’ with the commission to design a hotel and condominium overlooking Brooklyn Bridge Park (above).

Michael Arad designed a rooftop garden for the Earth School in Manhattan; a major new development in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood includes gardens by Thomas Balsley’s firm; SFMOMA announced that it will close for three years, beginning in June 2013, to make way for an expansion by Craig Dykers’ Snøhetta (pictured at left); the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, led by John Palmieri, approved two projects that could anchor new medical and arts districts in Atlantic City; Board Member Claire Weisz worked closely with Charles McKinney to design new water fountains for New York City parks, with the first one installed in Greenpoint’s Transmitter Park.

In Sandy Springs, GA, David Dixon’s firm, Goody Clancy, will develop a downtown master plan focused on improving commuting conditions; last week, a team from SOM lead by Phil Enquist presented new details about their Lakeside development project of a former US Steel plant on the South Side of Chicago; Eric Galipo was on the team from H3 whose campus master plan was recently approved by the Board of Trustees at Adelphi University; John Palmieri’s Casino Reinvestment Development Authority has released a new master plan for Atlantic City designed by Jon Jerde’s Jerde Partnership; Mary Margaret Jones and her firm, Hargreaves Associates, presented their design concepts for Destination Bayfront to a 250-person audience in Corpus Christi, TX; Emerson College broke ground on their new L.A. campus building designed by Board Member Thom Mayne; last Thursday, Gregg Pasquarelli presented SHoP’s vision for Pier 17 in Lower Manhattan’s South Street Seaport to Community Board 1 (pictured at left).

Lance Jay Brown will serve as a juror for the AIANY State 2012 Honors Awards, to be presented this coming April; the teams proceeding to the third and final round of the National Mall Design Competition, managed by Donald Stastny, were announced, with Craig Dykers, Michael Manfredi, Rob Rogers, and Peter Walker all still in the mix; Dykers was also just announced as the chair of the jury for the 2012 Steedman Fellowship in Architecture International Design Competition; Ron Harwick’s Columbia Parc neighborhood in New Orleans (pictured at left) had a banner year, taking home multiple honors–click here to download a full list of awards and more information on the project; Patron Steven Holl’s Cité de l’Océan et du Surf in Biarritz, France, won the sole award in the Play category in Architect magazine’s 2011 Annual Design Review; critic Lee Bey cited the opening of Helmut Jahn’s Mansueto Library on his list of the best Chicago architecture of the past year (echoing Blair Kamin’s list from earlier in the month); the Parks for the People competition, organized by Olympia Kazi’s Van Alen Institute and with Steven Handel sitting on the jury, just announced the selection of nine teams to move on to the second round–one of which is led by CCNY’s Denise Hoffman Brandt and Board Member Toni Griffin; Daniel Libeskind’s Crystals at CityCenter project in Las Vegas won Gold and Sustainable Design Awards in the ICSC’s annual US Design & Development Awards; Urban Omnibus announced an essay competition to complement the Architectural League’s exhibit The Unfinished Grid, with our own Board President Michael Sorkin on the jury (deadline: 2/1/12); and Rosemary Wakeman has received a EURIAS Senior Fellowship to spend the next year at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies completing her book on the New Town Movement.

The AIA’s New York chapter, led by Rick Bell, has just put out the call for entries for the 2012 AIANY Design Awards (deadline: 2/3/12); Francis Cauffman, led by James Crispino, has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing A/E/C industry firms on ZweigWhite’s annual Hot Firms List; Patron Steven Holl was named as the winner of the prestigious 2012 AIA Gold Medal; SOM’s Chicago Office, where Philip Enquist is the Partner in Charge of Urban Design and Planning, received AIA Chicago’s Firm of the Year award; Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin included the opening of Helmut Jahn’s Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago (pictured at left) in his round-up of the best architecture of 2011; Board Member Enrique Norten will serve as a juror for this year’s Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award, which will focus on Cape Town, South Africa (deadline: 2/24/12); AmericasMart founder John Portman will receive a special honor, the “Legend for Life” award, in recognition of his five decades of entrepreneurship and service to the home decor industry; Board Member Saskia Sassen made Foreign Policy magazine’s list of the Top 100 Global Thinkers for her “passionate advocacy of an urban-based society”; and the undergraduate program at the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture, led by Frederick Steiner, was ranked second in the nation by DesignIntelligence.

The annual Open House New York will take place this weekend (10/15-16), with a kick-off party tonight in Midtown. Buildings by many Fellows (Sara Caples, Linda Pollak, Claire Weisz, et al) will be open to visitors. Meanwhile, the Chicago Architecture Foundation will launch its own annual Open House series this weekend as well, featuring tours of buildings by Phil Enquist, Helmut Jahn, and many others.

Director Ben Loeterman’s feature-length film about the life and work of John Portman, A Life of Building, will have its film festival premiere at the Architecture Film Festival in Rotterdam next week before making its way to New York for the Architecture and Design Film Festival later this month. PBS will broadcast Chicago affiliate WTTW’s documentary on Robert AM Stern (pictured at left) nationally on October 9th and 10th. Online, you can catch Board President Michael Sorkin discussing the World Trade Center rebuilding process in a Telegraph video feature, and a TalkingScience clip featuring Ernie Hutton on sustainability in New York City.

PMc Mag called Matt Blesso “New York’s Host with the Most”; Susan Chin was announced [PDF] as the new Executive Director of the Design Trust for Public Space; the launch of an effort to find an architect for the re-vamp of Chicago’s iconic Navy Pier (pictured at left) led to rumblings that both Phil Enquist and Helmut Jahn are considering throwing their respective hats in the ring; Bruce Fowle served on the jury for the AIA’s National Healthcare Design Awards; Architectural Record profiled Alex Gorlin’s contemporary take on the rowhouse in East Brooklyn; CCGSAPP’s new blog features an interview with Alfredo Brillembourg and Denise Hoffman Brandt on their new co-edited issue of SLUM Lab, which debuted during Urban Design Week; Daniel Libeskind was announced as the architect for a new wing at his iconic Jewish Museum in Berlin; FastCo Design has a great story on the collaboration, in Villahermosa, Mexico, between Board Member Enrique Norten and Barbara Wilks on a new museum and park; Moshe Safdie’s Kauffman Center just opened in Kansas City; Jonathan Schrag was appointed to serve as Deputy Commissioner for Energy in the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection; and Board President Michael Sorkin’s new book, All Over the Map, has been receiving rave reviews from the likes of the Guardian and the Telegraph.
