The Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at St. Louis’ Washington University announced its spring lecture series, with Craig Dykers set to speak tonight (2/1), and visits from Gregg Pasquarelli and Richard Sennett scheduled for later this semester; Rob Rogers will speak about Rogers Marvel’s recent work (including President’s Park South, pictured at left) at the National Building Museum in Washington on 2/2; Denise Hoffman Brandt and Board Member Toni Griffin have organized a panel, Defining Cultural Landscapes, at CCNY on 2/3 (with opening remarks by Olympia Kazi); the Center for Architecture will host the panel Freedom of Assembly: Public Space Today Redux on 2/4, with Thomas Balsley, Rick Bell, Lance Jay Brown, and Susan Chin all participating (Brown will be back at the Center, with David Dixon, for a discussion about Climate Change on 2/17); Bruce Fowle will speak at the Center’s Active Design 201 on 2/7; Board Member Claire Weisz will speak in New York, also on 2/7, at the Studio-X panel Trash Tubes of the Future; Board Member Enrique Norten will give a talk at the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach on 2/9; that same day, in New York, Ernie Hutton will moderate a discussion on the Miami21 zoning initiative; and a new exhibit at the National Academy, featuring work by Robert A.M. Stern, has just opened and will remain on view in New York through 4/29.

Grahame Shane will lead the League-hosted panel Urban Design Since 1945 – A Global Perspective in New York; also on 11/17, Donald Stastny will lead a public forum on the master plan that he has been developing for St. Louis’ Grand Center arts and entertainment district; and Bruce Fowle will join the panel discussion Benchmarking in Action: Retrofitting New York at the Center for Architecture on 11/30.

Archtober kicks off today with the opening of three new exhibitions at the Center for Architecture in New York, including Buildings = Energy, for which Colin Cathcart, Bruce Fowle, and Laurie Kerr all served on the Advisory Committee. The IfUD is hosting a book talk on the High Line with Founder Ann Ferebee and Jeff Byles next Friday (10/7) from 12:00-1:00 PM, and we hope to see you there! Many Fellows will be participating in other events during the month-long festival: Kerr and Richard Dattner will both speak at the symposium When Green is not an Option but the Law! on 10/3; Deborah Gans will speak on, and Lance Jay Brown will moderate, the panel VisioNYC 2080: Towards a Risk-Resilient City on 10/6; and Cathcart will give a presentation on “Furry Buildings” at the conference High-Performance Landscapes: People, Places, Plants on 10/21. PMc Mag called Matt Blesso “New York’s Host with the Most”; Susan Chin was announced [PDF] as the new Executive Director of the Design Trust for Public Space; the launch of an effort to find an architect for the re-vamp of Chicago’s iconic Navy Pier (pictured at left) led to rumblings that both Phil Enquist and Helmut Jahn are considering throwing their respective hats in the ring; Bruce Fowle served on the jury for the AIA’s National Healthcare Design Awards; Architectural Record profiled Alex Gorlin’s contemporary take on the rowhouse in East Brooklyn; CCGSAPP’s new blog features an interview with Alfredo Brillembourg and Denise Hoffman Brandt on their new co-edited issue of SLUM Lab, which debuted during Urban Design Week; Daniel Libeskind was announced as the architect for a new wing at his iconic Jewish Museum in Berlin; FastCo Design has a great story on the collaboration, in Villahermosa, Mexico, between Board Member Enrique Norten and Barbara Wilks on a new museum and park; Moshe Safdie’s Kauffman Center just opened in Kansas City; Jonathan Schrag was appointed to serve as Deputy Commissioner for Energy in the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection; and Board President Michael Sorkin’s new book, All Over the Map, has been receiving rave reviews from the likes of the Guardian and the Telegraph.
On Ground Zero

Our Fellows have been heavily involved in the reconstruction of Ground Zero–Michael Arad and Peter Walker designed the memorial, while Craig Dykers designed the adjacent museum pavilion, and Daniel Libeskind the master plan for the site. Reviews by Justin Davidson, Inga Saffron, and Christopher Hawthorne have appeared in advance of the memorial’s opening this September 11th. Libeskind’s role has also been the subject of some great coverage. Ethel Sheffer contributed an article, “Ground Zero a Decade Later,” to the most recent issue of Planning, Bloomberg Businessweek featured a cover story entitled “The Saving of Ground Zero,” and Architectural Record includes an extensive write-up on the site in their special feature “The Death and Life of a Great American City: New York 2001-2011.” Tomorrow, the Center for Architecture will host the conference Lower Manhattan Rising: Looking Toward 9/11/2021, which features an excellent line-up including Arad, Dykers, Libeskind, and several other Fellows: Rick Bell, Bruce Fowle, Ernest Hutton, Jack Nyman, and Donna Walcavage.

Said Bruce Fowle, president-elect of the National Academy Museum and School, on the recovery and re-opening of that once-threatened institution: “The doors are reopening on a whole other world there;” in a recent article on the many ways in which New York City is attempting to become a cleaner and greener place, AM New York spoke with Laurie Kerr (pictured at left), who noted that “Buildings have an enormous impact on the environment; building codes should reflect that;” and speaking of her involvement in the aforementioned Riverside Center project in The Villager, Ethel Sheffer noted that it was getting involved with her Community Board that led her to become a professional planner: “You have to become citizen experts.”

Four Fellows Win AIA Design Awards

The Institute is well-represented on the list of winners of this year’s AIANY Design Awards: Patron Steven Holl received an Honor Award in Architecture for the Horizontal Skyscraper project in Shenzhen; Board Member Thom Mayne’s Phare Tower design in Paris (pictured at left) was recognized in the Unbuilt Work category; Fellow Bruce Fowle’s FXFOWLE scored two awards, both in New York with partners Diller Scofidio + Renfro (in Architecture for the Hypar Pavilion and in Urban Design for the Lincoln Center Public Spaces); and Claire Weisz for the NYC Information Center in Times Square. All honorees will be recognized at an award luncheon at Cipriani Wall Street on April 12th, 2011.
