Deborah Gans‘ new rose window for the Museum at Eldridge Street, designed in collaboration with artist Kiki Smith (and pictured at left), received a 2011 Faith & Form award from the IFRAA Awards Program for Religious Art & Architecture; the Land Art Generator Initiative design competition announced its kickoff, with Executive Director Anne Guiney on the jury (deadline: 7/1/12); recipients of the 2012 AIA Honor Awards were announced–among the winners are Rob Rogers and Board Members Toni Griffin, Thom Mayne, and Enrique Norten; Rosemary Wakeman was awarded a EURIAS Senior Fellowship, and will spend the next academic year at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies completing her book on the New Town Movement; Womens’ E-News will honor Beverly Willis as one of their 21 Leaders for the 21st Century at a gala reception this May.

The AIA’s New York chapter, led by Rick Bell, has just put out the call for entries for the 2012 AIANY Design Awards (deadline: 2/3/12); Francis Cauffman, led by James Crispino, has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing A/E/C industry firms on ZweigWhite’s annual Hot Firms List; Patron Steven Holl was named as the winner of the prestigious 2012 AIA Gold Medal; SOM’s Chicago Office, where Philip Enquist is the Partner in Charge of Urban Design and Planning, received AIA Chicago’s Firm of the Year award; Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin included the opening of Helmut Jahn’s Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago (pictured at left) in his round-up of the best architecture of 2011; Board Member Enrique Norten will serve as a juror for this year’s Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award, which will focus on Cape Town, South Africa (deadline: 2/24/12); AmericasMart founder John Portman will receive a special honor, the “Legend for Life” award, in recognition of his five decades of entrepreneurship and service to the home decor industry; Board Member Saskia Sassen made Foreign Policy magazine’s list of the Top 100 Global Thinkers for her “passionate advocacy of an urban-based society”; and the undergraduate program at the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture, led by Frederick Steiner, was ranked second in the nation by DesignIntelligence.

In his latest Gotham Gazette column, Tom Angotti looks into NYC’s plans for its new bikeshare program; Matt Berman and his partner Andrew Kotchen launched SpruceBox, a new web platform to help homeowners visualize renovation projects; Phil Enquist won two competitions to develop master plans for a 2-kilometer stretch of the Yangtze Riverfront in downtown Nanjing and a new urban center at Duqm City in Oman; William Fain’s firm recently completed master plans for the Chinese cities of Chengdu and XiCheng; Anthony Flint argued for concentrating early development of a high-speed rail system in the US in megaregions like the Northeast Corridor; Board Member Toni Griffin joined in on the New York Times‘ most recent Room For Debate feature on the demolition of foreclosed housing; construction work has begun on Patron Steven Holl’s athletic complex for Columbia at the northern tip of Manhattan (pictured at left); Madison’s Chazen Museum of Art, designed by Rodolfo Machado’s firm, has just opened; the National Mall Design Competition, led by Don Stastny, announced its jury, which will include Board Member Thom Mayne; Linda Pollak will serve as the Lead Juror for AIA Pittsburgh’s Design Pittsburgh awards; and Rosemary Wakeman spoke to the Baltimore Sun about gentrification in that city’s Union Square neighborhood.

The AIA Council of Architectural Component Executives named Rick Bell, director of the AIANY chapter and the Center for Architecture, as its Executive of the Year; Sara Caples’ Queens Theater-in-the-Park received two recent awards: one for Best Restoration from the Municipal Art Society’s MASterworks (for which Deborah Berke served on the jury), and another for Best Use of Color from Architectural Lighting magazine; the New York Observer included Ken Fisher (pictured at left) on their list of the Top Lawyers in NYC Commercial Real Estate Right Now; and Barbara Wilks (whose waterfront redevelopment in Troy is just getting underway) was named one of the Best Landscape Architects in New York by H&G Ideas.

The colorful KfW Westarkade tower in Frankfurt (pictured at left), designed by Matthias Sauerbruch, was named the Best Tall Building in Europe for 2011 by the CTBUH (Sauerbruch’s Oval Offices in Cologne were also featured in Architectural Record & Surface); the World Architecture Festival announced that they have named IfUD Board Chair Michael Sorkin the head of its ‘Super-Jury’ for 2011; the opening of Helmut Jahn’s Mansuetto Library was cited as one of the most important design events during the first half of 2011 by Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin.

Congratulations to all three of the Fellows who will be honored next week at the AIANY’s 144th Annual Meeting: Daniel Libeskind with the Medal of Honor, Charles McKinney with an Honorary Membership, and Laurie Kerr with the Public Architect Award; and in the last update we announced that Richard Dattner would be receiving a 2010 Design Award from the City of New York’s Public Design Commission at a ceremony on June 20th; we’ve since learned that Deborah Berke will also be honored with a Design Award for the 122CC Community Arts Center project, and Patron Steven Holl will be honored for the Hunter’s Point Community Library. The New York Times went shopping for coffee tables with Deborah Berke; AECOM Chief Innovation Officer Joseph Brown commented on his firm’s new partnership with IBM’s Smarter Planet Initiative; the Shanghai flagship of retailer Ports 1961, designed by Board Member Winka Dubbeldam, has just opened; Toronto’s Ryerson University revealed renderings of an eye-catching new building by Craig Dykers‘ Snøhetta (pictured at left); William Fain served on the jury of this year’s AIA Pennsylvania Design Excellence Awards, which were presented this past week; Patron Steven Holl’s athletic center for Columbia in Inwood was recently approved by the city; Apartment Therapy Boston featured Deborah Grossberg Katz’s “A Cabin in a Loft” project; the Lynn University Performing Arts Center, designed by Herbert Newman, is featured in the March 2011 issue of American School & University Magazine [PDF]; Linda Pollak reviewed NYC’s new High Performance Landscape Guidelines in Topos 74 [PDF]; construction has begun on John Portman’s newest hotel in Shenzhen; Richard Sennett was announced as one of the jurors for the Watermill Center’s International Residency Program; and John Wong’s SWA Group will be designing a new park around an historic schoolhouse in Milpitas, CA.

Theo David Honored in Cyprus Architecture Awards

Fellow Theo David’s design for the GSP Athletes Estia was honored as a distinguished project in the 2010 Architecture State Awards in Cyprus, the ceremony for which took place in the presence of the President Christofias.

Steven Holl’s Firm Receives Progressive Architecture Awards

The Progressive Architecture Awards have honored Institute fellow Steven Holl and his firm’s LM Harbor Gateway as one of nine 2010 recipients. The Awards are administered by Architect Magazine, and this year’s winners were selected from a group of more than 300 projects.
