Line of Fire, an exhibit of menorahs designed by Daniel Libeskind, opened recently at the Jewish Museum in New York, where it will remain on view through 1/30/11; the Architectural League of New York announced the jury for their competition It’s Different, which will include Michael Manfredi and Board Member Thom Mayne; speaking of Mr. Mayne, Thom is in the midst of a cross-continental lecture tour in Australia, speaking this evening (12/15/10) in Melbourne and tomorrow (12/16/10) in Perth; and finally, a reminder that Las Vegas Studio, an exhibit of photos from the archives of Patrons Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, is on view in Chicago through 2/19/11. Omar Blaik and Board Member Toni Griffin will both participate in CEOs for Cities’ Urban Leaders Summit 2010 in Detroit on 11/8/10 (and while we’re on the subject, don’t miss this excellent profile of Griffin’s work in Detroit in Architect); Kate Orff will speak about Living Cities at the NY Botanical Garden on 11/8/10; Michael Manfredi will join an Architectural League-organized panel in New York about Muju, Korea’s planned Taekwondo Park on 11/9/10; Barbara Wilks will join another League panel discussing Hudson River Park on 11/13/10; Las Vegas Studio, an exhibition of images from the archives of Patrons Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown (pictured at left), opened at Chicago’s Graham Foundation on 10/28/10 and will run through 2/19/11; and Chris Hardwicke’s Ravine City is featured in the urban-ag exhibition Carrot City at Parsons in New York now through 12/15/10.

Tonight (10/18) Lyn Rice will deliver the lecture “Everyday Rebel” at NJIT in Newark, NJ; Board Member Byron Stigge will speak at the Forum for Urban Design’s Eco-Cities event in Manhattan on 10/20; the October installment of Kenneth K. Fisher’s CityWide program on CUNY-TV premieres at 10:00 AM on 10/20; Board President Michael Sorkin will speak about his work on the US pavilion at the Venice Biennale at the Architectural League’s Workshopping New York on 10/20; Ethel Sheffer and Sheena Wright will both participate in panels during the Municipal Art Society’s Summit for New York City on 10/21-22; Rodolfo Machado’s Bowdoin Museum of Art renovation is included in the Maine Modern exhibition at the Storefront for Architecture in Portland, ME, now through 10/31; Mattias Sauerbruch’s winning design for the M9 Museum (pictured at left) will be on view in Venice along with the other competition entries now through 11/21.

Benepe, Burden, and Burney to Discuss Design in New York

The third installment of the Architectural League’s Conversations on New York series will take place tomorrow, July 20, at 7:00 PM in the Cooper Union’s Great Hall, 7 East 7th Street. This session will bring together the heads of three of New York City’s most design-conscious departments: Adrian Benepe (Parks), Amanda Burden (Planning), and David Burney (Design and Construction). The discussion will be moderated by New Yorker architecture critic Paul Goldberger. 9th Breakfast Club

On June 24, IfUD Fellows gathered at the Architectural League of New York’s The City We Imagined, The City We Made exhibition in Lower Manhattan for our 9th Breakfast Club to discuss the subject of the show, development in New York City over the past decade, with its curators, Rosalie Genevro and Gregory Wessner. We were also joined by Columbia University’s Vishaan Chakrabarti, whom many of you may know through his participation in last fall’s Arrested Development symposium, Gregg Pasquerelli of SHoP Architects, who spoke about his work on the Atlantic Yards project, and Emiliano Espasandin, a member of the team that imagined the transportation future of Buenos Aires for the Institute for Transportation & Development Policy’s Our Cities Ourselves exhibit, which opened last night at the Center for Architecture. Michael Sorkin to Discuss The City We Imagined, The City We Made

IfUD board chair Michael Sorkin will join designer Alex Garvin and Architectural League of New York executive director Rosalie Genevro today, June 17, at 7:00 PM for the first of a series of conversations based on The City We Imagined, The City We Made exhibit. The discussion will take place in the Rose Auditorium at the Cooper Union. Tickets will cost $10 per person, and can be purchased here until 3:00 PM this afternoon.

Mark your calendar: the Institute’s next Breakfast Club will take place on Thursday, June 24, at the Architectural League of New York’s The City We Imagined, The City We Made exhibition at 250 Hudson Street. We’ll be meeting there in the exhibition gallery at 8:30 AM to discuss the show with its creators. We’re very excited to be working with the League on this event, and we hope that you’ll join us for what promises to be a lively and enlightening look at the past decade of development in New York.
