At the request of the Noguchi Museum, the Architectural League recently hosted a design charrette about the museum’s ongoing “Civic Action: A Vision for Long Island City” project, now an installation at Socrates Sculpture Park (pictured above). The session centered on “how to sustain neighborhood vitality [in Long Island City] by capitalizing on distinctive characteristics rather than succumbing to the often homogenizing effects of mainstream real estate development.” Charrette participants included Andrew Bernheimer, Denise Hoffman Brandt, Deborah Gans, Lyn Rice, and Board Member Claire Weisz. Urban Omnibus published video, images, and an article about the workshop.

The AIA New York Design Awards 2012 were announced last week, and we’re pleased to report that five of our fellows are among the winners: Michael Arad and Peter Walker received the Architecture Honor Award for the National September 11 Memorial; Andrew Bernheimer was awarded an Un-Built Work Merit prize; Mary Miss won an Urban Design Honor Award for work in Santa Fe; and Bill Ryall’s firm received an Interior Merit Award for a Greenwich Village townhouse redesign. In other awards news, the firms of Patron Steven Holl and Craig Dykers both won ArchDaily’s Building of the Year Awards 2011 for their respective Museum of Ocean and Surf, and Tverrfjellhytta projects (pictured at left); and David Grahame Shane’s recent book, Urban Design Since 1945: A Global Perspective, was shortlisted for a Publishers Award by the UK-based Urban Design Group.

Cosentini Associates has just appointed Gretchen Bank as their Director of Business Development and Marketing; Andrew Bernheimer has been announced as the new director for Parsons’ Master in Architecture program; Ken Fisher interviewed Camille Rivera, a leader In the Working Families Party in New York, for his CityWide talk show on 2/15; as part of their AEC Knowledge series, the AIANY released “Sustainable High Density Affordable Housing,” a new digital course presented by Mark Ginsberg; Chris Hardwicke’s Ravine City concept is featured in the new book Carrot City: Creating Places for Urban Agriculture (pictured at left); Patron Steven Holl and Board Member Thom Mayne are finalists to design the first academic building on Cornell’s new Roosevelt Island campus (Holl’s Zaituny Bay project was also recently profiled in the New York Times); David Manfredi recently presented Elkus Manfredi’s proposed “Ink Block” mixed-use development to a public forum in Boston; The Architect’s Newspaper profiled the Queens Plaza revamp designed by Linda Pollak’s firm; the March issue of Dwell features the ‘Ghost Houses’ project by Ted Shelton; Ethel Sheffer has been selected to join the AICP College of Fellows and will be inducted at the National Planning Conference in April; finally, congratulations to Beverly Willis, whose Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation celebrated its tenth anniversary on 2/21.

Bentonville’s 21c Museum Hotel, designed by Deborah Berke, broke ground last month; Urban Omnibus visited Matthew Berman’s BLDG 92 museum and visitors center at the Brooklyn Navy Yard; Andrew Bernheimer and his sister Kate, an award-winning fairy tale author, collaborated on a three-part series of posts at Places Journal that gives architectural form to famous fairy tale houses; Matt Blesso and Mark Gardner were both interviewed as part of openhousenewyork’s “I Am OHNY” series; NYC Media released a video extolling the virtues of Colin Cathcart’s Greenhouse Project at Manhattan’s P.S. 333; the first renderings of a curvaceous new Maggie’s Centre in Aberdeen, Scotland, designed by Craig Dykers, made a splash; Vince Ferrandino is leading the effort to build a solid transition team for Mount Vernon, New York’s mayor-elect Ernie Davis; Mary Margaret Jones led a public forum on Hargreaves Associates’ new plan for Richmond’s James Riverfront; John Portman has opened a new office in Hong Kong–his fourth in Asia, after Shanghai, Seoul, and Mumbai; and it’s not every day that you can see a Fellow’s work in a big-screen blockbuster, but the ASLA’s The Dirt recently pointed out that John Wong’s Burj Khalifa Park has something of a “starring role” in the new Mission Impossible movie!

If you’re looking for some ideas for what to give to design-minded friends, family, or colleagues, we’d recommend browsing through the list of our Fellows’ publications over the past year: Tom Angotti’s New York For Sale came out in paperback; Andy Bernheimer and Board Member Claire Weisz both had projects included in Michael Crosbie’s New York Dozen; Jim Dart and Deborah Gans‘ work in New Orleans was featured in Beyond Shelter: Architecture and Human Dignity; Founder Ann Ferebee released a new edition of A History of Design from the Victorian Era to the Present, updated to include recent years; critic Justin Davidson included Alexander Gorlin’s Tomorrow’s Houses on his round-up of the most Notable Design Books of 2011; Ken Greenberg’s Walking Home was published to great acclaim; Jamie Hand, Olympia Kazi, and Kate Orff co-edited Gateway: Visions for an Urban National Park, which features work by Barbara Wilks; Horizontal Skyscraper, Patron Steven Holl’s latest publication, is just hitting bookstore shelves now; Board Member Thom Mayne rolled out a new manifesto called Combinatory Urbanism: The Complex Behavior of Collective Form; Board President Michael Sorkin’s most recent collection of essays, All Over the Map, has been building buzz; and Frederick Steiner released Design for a Vulnerable Planet this past spring.

Architecture for Humanity named Andy Bernheimer as a finalist in their competition to design a skate park under the Manhattan Bridge; Solar One was announced as the recipient of a $1.25MM city grant to build NYC’s first energy-positive building, designed by Colin Cathcart’s firm Kiss + Cathcart; John di Domenico’s Atlantic Terminal Pavilion was profiled in the Spring 2011 edition of Metals in Construction magazine; Craig Dykers’ Snøhetta was named as a finalist in a competition to re-design Aberdeen’s Union Terrace Gardens; Patron Steven Holl spoke with Carla Leitao about his Cite de l’Ocean et du Surf in France, and was profiled in the latest issue of ICON; Mary Margaret Jones served on the jury for the 2011 SOM Prize; a team of Langan International engineers led by George Leventis is working on the design for the recently-proposed Kingdom Tower in Jeddah (pictured at left), which will be the world’s tallest building when completed; David Manfredi’s firm will serve as the architect for the expansion of the Green Bay Packers’ storied home at Lambeau Field; Michael Manfredi’s and Kate Orff’s respective firms have been selected to participate in an ideas generation project to re-think Pittsburgh’s Portal Bridge; ArtDaily reports that no fewer than four major buildings by Moshe Safdie will open this fall; and Kris Scheerlinck has written an essay on Barcelona’s Plaza de las Glories Catalanes in the latest issue of Quaderns.

The Design Trust for Public Space announced three Fellows for its Making Manhattan project–including two IfUD Fellows, Andy Bernheimer and Colin Cathcart; the Society for Ecological Restoration International announced Steven N. Handel as the winner of the 2011 Theodore Sperry Award; Sudhir Jambhekar and Hank White won an International Architecture Award for the King Abdullah Financial District Mosque in Riyadh (pictured at left), while Board Member Thom Mayne won for the Giant Interactive Group Corporate Headquarters in Shanghai; John Portman has been announced as a candidate for election to the American Furniture Hall of Fame; and Don Stastny was inducted into the College of Fellows of the Canadian Institute of Planners, following earlier elevations to Fellowship in both the American Institute of Architects and the American Institute of Certified Planners.
