Tom Angotti criticized Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC for not focusing enough on providing affordable housing in the Gotham Gazette; The Epoch Times interviewed Rick Bell about how the economic recovery will affect the architectural profession; Inhabitat interviewed Matt Berman about workshop/apd’s GreeNOLA project; land-use advocacy organization The Fayette Alliance has launched a campaign to bring Omar Blaik to Lexington to help develop a plan for enhancing the relationship between that city and its anchor institutions; the New York Times plugged IfUD Founder Ann Ferebee’s new book, A History of Design form the Victorian Era to the Present; Anthony Flint wrote for The Angle about how bike-sharing could improve traffic in Boston; John Hartmann spoke to Brian Lehrer about his map for WNYC’s “New Littles” feature (pictured at left), popped up in an Architect profile of the non-profit SUPERFRONT, and launched a new Kickstarter fundraising initiative for his +FARM project; a+t released a new book on mixed use hybrid buildings with a preface written by Patron Steven Holl; Gregg Pasquarelli talked to Architect about the launch of SHoP Construction, while Paul Goldberger reviewed the firm’s newly-opened East River Esplanade in the New Yorker; Christopher Hawthorne reviewed Rob Rogers’ firm Rogers Marvel’s winning proposal for the redesign of Washington DC’s Ellipse; and Moshe Safdie was announced as the architect for Bishan Central, a planned 540-unit residential skyscraper in Singapore.

IfUD Founder Ann Ferebee and Jeff Byles will speak about their new book, A History of Design from the Victorian Era to the Present, at the Skyscraper Museum on 8/2; AIANY is organizing a tour of Michael Manfredi’s Diana Center at Barnard (pictured at left) on 8/4; and Board Member Saskia Sassen will speak on the notions of comfort and “cityness” at the BMW Guggenheim Lab in New York on 8/12.

Congratulations to all three of the Fellows who will be honored next week at the AIANY’s 144th Annual Meeting: Daniel Libeskind with the Medal of Honor, Charles McKinney with an Honorary Membership, and Laurie Kerr with the Public Architect Award; and in the last update we announced that Richard Dattner would be receiving a 2010 Design Award from the City of New York’s Public Design Commission at a ceremony on June 20th; we’ve since learned that Deborah Berke will also be honored with a Design Award for the 122CC Community Arts Center project, and Patron Steven Holl will be honored for the Hunter’s Point Community Library. Fellows’ Awards & Honors: Dattner, Hutton, Portman, & Whalley

The City of New York’s Public Design Commission will present Richard Dattner with an Award for Excellence for the design of the Spring Street Salt Shed (pictured at left) at a ceremony on June 20th; at last month’s AIA convention in New Orleans, Ernie Hutton was honored with an Associate Award in recognition of his service to the AIANY chapter; the Atlanta City Council voted to rename downtown’s Harris Street in honor of John Portman; and Andrew Whalley was named as the new Deputy Chairman of Grimshaw Architects.

Ziskind Elected to College of Fellows

Fellow David Miles Ziskind, Chief Architect at STV, has been elected to the prestigious College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. David and several other new AIA Fellows from the New York area were honored in Manhattan last night at a special reception at the Center for Architecture. This honor is bestowed on only 2,700 of the AIA’s 80,000 members (just over 3%), so congratulations are most certainly in order!

Claire Weisz will participate in a panel discussion, to be moderated by Wanda Bubriski, on Emily Roebling’s role in the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge tonight (3/15) in New York; Weisz will also speak at the New Museum tomorrow (3/16) as part of the Architectural League of New York’s Emerging Voices series; Gretchen Bank will lead a Marketing & PR seminar for the AIANY’s Architects’ Fast-Track Leadership Series on 3/23; a traveling exhibit of work by Craig Dykers’ Snøhetta has just landed at Lisbon’s Musea de Electricidade; and the exhibit “Alessi: Ethical and Radical,” featuring items designed by Patron Robert Venturi, opened recently at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where it will remain on view until 4/10.

Hopefully, you were able to make it out to the Center for Architecture last week for the panel discussion Architecture and the Dea[r]th of Drawing, which featured Board Chair Michael Sorkin; kudos to Fellow Rick Bell for hosting such an envigorating discussion of the current state of drawing in architecture! Recently, we learned that Fellow Theo. David is this Spring’s visiting professor at the Pratt in Rome architecture program, where the students are required to develop and present their design studio projects through drawing. We’re considering organizing a Breakfast Club to further the discussion, so if you are interested, please get in touch.

Cynthia Barton and Lance Jay Brown will participate on a panel in New York on 1/8 as part of the AIANY’s Haiti-Habitat competition; Joe Brown will speak at the 2011 VantageForum in Los Angeles on 1/11; Tom Angotti will speak at a special City Council meeting to discuss the potential impacts of allowing Wal-Mart to open stores in New York on 1/12; Claire Weisz will take part in a discussion about the 1999 Van Alen Institute competition TKTS2K on 1/12; and Manhattan’s PS/IS 276 (pictured at left), designed by Richard Dattner’s Dattner Architects, is featured in the AIANY’s Design for Decades exhibit, on view at the Center for Architecture now through 1/22.

We have three new Fellows to announce: Gretchen Bank, a strategic marketing consultant and current director of the AIANY Marketing & Public Relations Committee; Eric Lee, the president of management consultancy Bennett Midland LLC, which specializes in projects for public, non-profit, and civic organizations; and Darius Sollohub, the newly-appointed director of the College of Architecture and Design at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
