The colorful KfW Westarkade tower in Frankfurt (pictured at left), designed by Matthias Sauerbruch, was named the Best Tall Building in Europe for 2011 by the CTBUH (Sauerbruch’s Oval Offices in Cologne were also featured in Architectural Record & Surface); the World Architecture Festival announced that they have named IfUD Board Chair Michael Sorkin the head of its ‘Super-Jury’ for 2011; the opening of Helmut Jahn’s Mansuetto Library was cited as one of the most important design events during the first half of 2011 by Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin.

Congratulations to all three of the Fellows who will be honored next week at the AIANY’s 144th Annual Meeting: Daniel Libeskind with the Medal of Honor, Charles McKinney with an Honorary Membership, and Laurie Kerr with the Public Architect Award; and in the last update we announced that Richard Dattner would be receiving a 2010 Design Award from the City of New York’s Public Design Commission at a ceremony on June 20th; we’ve since learned that Deborah Berke will also be honored with a Design Award for the 122CC Community Arts Center project, and Patron Steven Holl will be honored for the Hunter’s Point Community Library. The City of New York’s Public Design Commission will present Richard Dattner with an Award for Excellence for the design of the Spring Street Salt Shed (pictured at left) at a ceremony on June 20th; at last month’s AIA convention in New Orleans, Ernie Hutton was honored with an Associate Award in recognition of his service to the AIANY chapter; the Atlanta City Council voted to rename downtown’s Harris Street in honor of John Portman; and Andrew Whalley was named as the new Deputy Chairman of Grimshaw Architects.

Two Fellows Honored in Academia

Board Member Thom Mayne was elected to SCI-Arc’s Board of Trustees last week; up in Canada, Larry Wayne Richards (pictured at left), who recently served as a juror for the biannual 20 + Change architectural design competition, was awarded Professor Emeritus status at the University of Toronto. Congratulations to both!

The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture’s newly-formed College of Distiguished Professors announced the election of Fellow Lance Jay Brown as its very first Chancellor. Congratulations to Lance on this prestigious honor!

Stern Elected to Academy of Arts & Letters, Profiled on WTTW

Fellow Robert A.M. Stern was elected to become a member of the the American Academy of Arts & Letters. Stern was also selected to receive the 2011 Driehaus Prize last fall; to mark the recent presentation of that award, journalist Geoffrey Baer profiled the architect for Chicago’s WTTW.

Sorkin to Serve on “Super-Jury”

Michael Sorkin, President of the IfUD’s Board of Directors, was recently selected to serve on the “super-jury” for the 2011 World Architecture Festival, which will take place in Barcelona this November 2-4. Michael will join UNStudio’s Ben van Berkel, Jo Noero of Noero Wolff Architects, Odile Decq of ODBC, and Kongjian Yu from Turenscape in presiding over this international gathering of more than 5,000 architects and urbanists.

Four Fellows Win AIA Design Awards

The Institute is well-represented on the list of winners of this year’s AIANY Design Awards: Patron Steven Holl received an Honor Award in Architecture for the Horizontal Skyscraper project in Shenzhen; Board Member Thom Mayne’s Phare Tower design in Paris (pictured at left) was recognized in the Unbuilt Work category; Fellow Bruce Fowle’s FXFOWLE scored two awards, both in New York with partners Diller Scofidio + Renfro (in Architecture for the Hypar Pavilion and in Urban Design for the Lincoln Center Public Spaces); and Claire Weisz for the NYC Information Center in Times Square. All honorees will be recognized at an award luncheon at Cipriani Wall Street on April 12th, 2011.

Fellow Designs NYC’s Best Picnic Spot

New York magazine’s annual Best of New York issue hit the stands last week, and the West Harlem Piers Park, designed by our own Barbara Wilks, was named as the city’s Best Picnic Spot. The weather has been improving lately in the city, and if you’re looking for a good way to kick back and relax with friends this weekend, there’s now official proof that you can’t beat Wilks’ Hudson Riverfront greensward.
