At the New York Women’s Agenda’s recent 2010 Star Breakfast, Fellow Patricia Lancaster, president and CEO of the Lancaster Group and the first woman to ever serve as the commissioner of New York City’s Department of Buildings, was presented with an award honoring her leadership. Congratulations, Patricia!

Brooklyn’s Weeksville Heritage Center, designed by Sara Caples and her partner Everardo Jefferson, was recently featured on the FastCo Design blog; the Architect’s Newspaper recently looked at several innovative proposals for the future of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, including a green canopy by Colin Cathcart; Snøhetta, the Oslo-based firm led by Craig Dykers, was announced [pdf] last week as the winner of a design competition for the new Museum of Environmental Sciences in Guadalajara; Anthony Flint explored the world of PILOT programs in a piece at Crosscut; the Columbia Daily Spectator’s blog The Eye recently took a long hard look at the University’s plans for a new campus in Manhattanville, and Board member Maxine Griffith had plenty to say on the matter; ConstructionWeek recently spoke with Sudhir Jambhekar about his design for the KAFD Mosque in Riyadh (pictured at left); Moshe Safdie was selected to design a rather astoundingly-shaped apartment complex in Quinhuangdao, China; in case you missed the announcement in the Times this past weekend, Board Member Byron Stigge recently married Catherine Gaul at a ceremony in Manhattan; and Claire Weisz spoke to the FastCo Design team about her firm’s re-design of the Times Square Visitor Center in Manhattan.

Line of Fire, an exhibit of menorahs designed by Daniel Libeskind, opened recently at the Jewish Museum in New York, where it will remain on view through 1/30/11; the Architectural League of New York announced the jury for their competition It’s Different, which will include Michael Manfredi and Board Member Thom Mayne; speaking of Mr. Mayne, Thom is in the midst of a cross-continental lecture tour in Australia, speaking this evening (12/15/10) in Melbourne and tomorrow (12/16/10) in Perth; and finally, a reminder that Las Vegas Studio, an exhibit of photos from the archives of Patrons Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, is on view in Chicago through 2/19/11. High-profile projects by two Fellows started taking shape recently: the erection of steel at the site of Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, designed by Gregg Pasquarelli’s SHoP Architects, has just begun; and down in Dallas, work on Robert A.M. Stern’s George W. Bush Presidential Library (pictured at left) is just getting underway.

The extension of the Queens Theatre-in-the-Park (pictured at left), designed by Sara Caples’ firm Caples Jefferson, was recently selected [pdf] as New York Construction‘s Cultural Project of the Year; Ohio State University’s Knowlton School of Architecture recently honored Fellow Susan Chin with a Distinguished Alumnus Award for her work as the Assistant Commissioner for Capital Projects at the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs; Shane Coen’s Warroad Border Station was chosen by the 2010 GSA Design Awards jury for a Citation in Landscape Architecture, Honor Awards for Architecture and Engineering, and another Citation for Interior Design; and Bruce Fowle was presented with a trophy acknowledging FXFOWLE’s 15 years of involvement in the Canstruction NYC contest.

Metropolis recently interviewed Gregory Baldwin about ZGF’s design for a piazza in downtown Portland, OR; the Wall Street Journal spoke with Carmi Bee about his Berry Street residential project in Brooklyn; Deborah Berke, who recently wrapped up work on the master plan for the ECLA in Berlin, was named one of Elle Decor‘s Five Women in Design; Kenneth Drucker spoke to the Huffington Post about China’s plan to build 50 cities of one million people in the next two decades; Jamie Hand has accepted a new position as a Design Specialist at the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, DC; Board Member Cathy Lang Ho’s full review of the Venice Architecture Biennale is up at Architect; Helmut Jahn’s ambitious proposal for the revamp of Navy Pier (pictured at left) has been stirring up debate in the Windy City; Daniel Libeskind has been selected to design Finland’s second-largest arena; John Portman will design a new 250- to 500-room hotel as part of the $700MM expansion of the San Diego Convention Center; and Lyn Rice’s work on the New School’s Manhattan campus was featured in gb&d Magazine‘s November issue (see p. 48).
