Fellow’s Mobile Topiary Roams Bat-Yam

Fellow Ed Wall’s Roaming Forest was recently selected and built for the International Landscape Urbanism Biennale in Bat-Yam, Israel. Roaming Forest involved a series of movable installations that promoted new processes for making public spaces. The project was able to be moved by individuals and the municipality to create new public spaces and will continue to exist in the spaces of the city after the biennale.

Stern Takes Home 2010 Landmarks Lion

On Wednesday, October 27th, the Historic Districts Council presented Fellow Robert A.M. Stern with the 2010 Landmarks Lion award at the Four Seasons restaurant in New York. The award honored Stern’s efforts to preserve historic buildings and neighborhoods around New York City. The text of his acceptance speech is available here [PDF].

Boddy Re-thinks Vancouver’s Suburbs

Following up the ideas competition he co-convened earlier this year, Fellow Trevor Boddy is currently using TownShift: Suburb Into City submissions in a series of visually-driven public urban design workshops for the fast-growing Vancouver suburb of Surrey. Boddy’s critique of 2010 Winter Olympics architecture and urban design (“Vision Deficit” for Vancouver Review) is a finalist for “Best Social Issues” and “Gold Award, Best Article, All Categories” at the Western Magazine Awards.

Fall Fellows’ Dinner a Rousing Success!

It was wonderful to see so many Fellows this past Tuesday night at Double Crown restaurant for the 2010 Fall Fellows’ Dinner, The Social Life of (Very) Small Urban Spaces! Thanks again to all of our presenters, including NYC DOT plaza program director Andy Wiley-Schwartz, architect and Fellow Claire Weisz, artist Mary Miss, and Snøhetta Times Square team members Maura Rockcastle and Claire Fellman. It was a wonderful evening, and a truly provocative discussion. Water flowed for the first time last week at the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero (pictured at left), designed by Michael Arad and Peter Walker, during a brief test of the 30-foot-tall waterfalls; Philip Enquist was recently interviewed by ArchDaily about his work as the lead urban designer at SOM’s Chicago headquarters; the Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA, celebrated the opening of their Chadwick Floyd-designed addition just yesterday; this month’s issue of Landscape Architecture magazine features a cover story on Nancy Owens’ North Park project in Fort Totten, Queens [PDF]; Claire Weisz’s WXY Architects was named one of eleven finalists in a competition to design a new bridge near Brown University in Providence, RI; and Henry M. White, III, was recently honored for his work on the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway in New Jersey.

The Association of Architecture Organizations’ 2010 Annual Conference, Design In Action, will feature a talk by Rick Bell today, 11/15, in Chicago; Shane Coen (pictured at left) will deliver the lecture “Context Informs Form” at Harvard’s GSD on 11/17; IfUD friend Mary Miss will be honored at the NY-ASLA President’s Dinner on 11/18; the recently-opened Nordic Models + Common Ground, an exhibition of contemporary Nordic art and design curated by Craig Dykers’ firm Snøhetta, will be on view at Scandanavia House in Midtown Manhattan through 3/9/11.

Parsons to Host an Evening of Discussion for Urbanists

On Monday, November 29, Parsons the New School for Design will host the Present and Future of Urbanism, an evening of presentations, questions, and discussions on the state of the art and challenges for the future of cities as Parsons prepares to launch new graduate programs in Urbanism. The event will take place from 6:30-8:30 PM in the school’s Orientation Room, on the ground floor of 2 West 13th Street in Manhattan, and will be free and open to the public.

Newman Architects Wins Two AIA-CT Awards

Fellow Herbert Newman’s firm Newman Architects was recently presented with two 2010 Design Awards by the AIA Connecticut. In the Built Design Category, Newman was honored for the renovation and expansion of the North Branford Intermediate School, and the comprehensive renovation of John Edwards College on the Yale Unviersity campus (pictured at left) was honored in the Preservation Category. Contratulations to Herbert and everyone at Newman Architects who worked on these projects!

Omar Blaik and Board Member Toni Griffin will both participate in CEOs for Cities’ Urban Leaders Summit 2010 in Detroit on 11/8/10 (and while we’re on the subject, don’t miss this excellent profile of Griffin’s work in Detroit in Architect); Kate Orff will speak about Living Cities at the NY Botanical Garden on 11/8/10; Michael Manfredi will join an Architectural League-organized panel in New York about Muju, Korea’s planned Taekwondo Park on 11/9/10; Barbara Wilks will join another League panel discussing Hudson River Park on 11/13/10; Las Vegas Studio, an exhibition of images from the archives of Patrons Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown (pictured at left), opened at Chicago’s Graham Foundation on 10/28/10 and will run through 2/19/11; and Chris Hardwicke’s Ravine City is featured in the urban-ag exhibition Carrot City at Parsons in New York now through 12/15/10.

Fellow Brings Design Bookstore to Flatiron District

The Van Alen Institute, helmed by ex-IfUD Director and recently-minted Fellow Olympia Kazi, is preparing to open a pop-up architecture and design bookstore on the ground floor of its building at 30 West 22nd Street in New York City’s Flatiron District (pictured at left). A six-month trial run is being funded through a grant from the JM Kaplan Fund starting in November of this year.
