Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Fellows in the News: Fellow Meta Brunzema’s La Marqueta Mile project in Harlem has been generating a lot of great buzz lately; work has started and a construction webcam has gone live at the site of the new Bushwick Inlet Park in Brooklyn, designed by Fellow Colin Cathcart’s firm Kiss + Cathcart; Patron Steven Holl was recently selected to design the new Long Island City branch of the Queens Library; Fellow Jon Jerde’s groundbreaking Horton Plaza shopping center in San Diego (pictured at left) just hit the quarter-century mark, an anniversary the mall’s owners are celebrating with architectural tours; and finally, Fellow Claire Wiesz has been very busy — work on her revamp of Transmitter Park, just a few blocks upriver form the aforementioned Bushwick Inlet Park, has just started, and this week saw the unveiling of WXY Architecture’s plans for the overhaul of Fordham Plaza in the Bronx.

Coney Island Historic District Threatened

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Fellow Stuart Pertz is working to save from demolition four buildings within the Coney Island Historic District, which was just determined eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (check out photos at ScoutNY). Pertz is one of several people currently organizing a forum, set for September 17th at the CUNY Graduate Center, to discuss ways in which the preservation of historic buildings could provide the foundation for the redevelopment of Coney Island as a heritage destination. The group is looking for suggestions of panelists familiar with these types of projects across the USA and around the world.  This could include a) developers who have participated in similar projects; b) academics who have documented successful examples of such projects; and/or c) preservationists who can show the ease with which historic buildings can be restored and integrated with new construction. If you have any ideas for participants, please email us at info@ifud.org and we will get you in touch with Stuart.

10th Breakfast Club

Institute Fellows gathered at the Center for Architecture this morning, along with several distinguished guests, for a stimulating discussion of land use policy in New York City, and the work of the current Charter Revision Commission. Guests included Councilman Brad Lander, Commission Member Hope Cohen, the Related Companies’ Jay Kriegel, and Hunter College professor Tom Angotti. It was great to see so many of our Fellows at the Club; stay tuned for information about our next event, which should be coming up in September. In the meantime, check out the Facebook photo album from today’s discussion and, if you miss the Club but are still interested in learning more about land use, don’t miss the AIANY’s Land Use Education Forum tonight at 6:00 PM at the Center for Architecture.
