June Williamson Featured in GOOD Magazine

Institute Fellow June Williamson, Associate Professor of Urban Design at the City College of New York, was recently featured in GOOD Magazine’s Neighborhoods Issue. The article, “Agriculture is the New Golf: Rethinking Suburban Communities” by Allison Arieff, cites Williamson’s expertise in suburban development patterns. Williamson has worked extensively in the field  and co-authored the book Retrofitting Suburbia: Urban Design Solutions for Redesigning Suburb with Ellen Dunham-Jones.

Michael Sorkin Moderates Discussion on Future of NYC Streets

Michael Sorkin, Chair of the Institute’s Board of Directors and author of Twenty Minutes in Manhattan,  moderated a panel discussion at Scandinavia House on the future of New York City’s streets. The panel, Are New York’s Streets Out of (Design) Control, was hosted by the Municipal Arts Society as part of its tour series, New York’s Changing Streetscapes.

New Design Competition: “Build a Better Burb”

Build a Better Burb, sponsored by the Long Island Index, is seeking proposals for “retrofitting underutilized asphalt in suburban downtowns into innovative and surprising new uses, forms and urbanisms.” The competition seeks to “widen the debate about building a better – more sustainable and equitable – future for our burbs.” Register before June 21st. Guaranteed first prize of $10,000, $10,000 in additional prizes.

Denise Scott Brown Featured in The New York Review of Books

Institute Patron Denise Scott Brown was recently featured in The New York Review of Books in an excellent article by Martin Filler entitled “The World’s Foremost Female Architect.” Filler reevaluates Scott Brown’s career in light of the recent publication of her collected writings, Having Words, and an exhibition at MOCA in Los Angeles, “Las Vegas Studio: Images from the Archives of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown.”
