“Emerging Exchanges: New Architecture of India”, a two day symposium convened by Institute fellow Brian McGrath and Kazi Ashraf, was organized by The Architectural League of New York, the India China Institute of The New School, and Parsons The New School for Design. Institute board members Anthony Vidler and Michael Sorkin participated among many other distinguished figures.

Tom Angotti at Access Restricted: Capital of the World

As part of the lecture series “Access Restricted: Capital of the World”, Institute fellow Tom Angotti gave a talk about the history of grassroots community urban planning in New York designed to sustain neighborhoods. The lecture, called “Bottom-Up Planning in the Real Estate Capital of the World”, was organized by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

Actions for Urban Spaces Panel

Actions_for_urban_spaces Art in General will host a panel discussion on April 22nd examining the construction of public space, its effects on the flow of people through urban environments, and the social and economic ramifications of such directed movements. The discussion will feature Institute Executive Director Olympia Kazi, “Actions for Urban Spaces” artist John Hawke, artist Alex Villar, and Art in General Assistant Curator Nina Horisaki-Christens. Michael Sorkin Elected to American Academy of Arts & Sciences

Michael Sorkin, chair of the Institute’s board of directors, was elected to be a fellow at the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He will be inducted into the Academy at a ceremony on October 10th 2009, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Professor Sorkin was one of 210 leaders from the science, humanities, arts, business, public affairs, and nonprofit sectors elected to join one of the United States’ most prestigious honorary societies.
